The Chief Credit Officer (CCrO/CCO) is a senior executive who establishes credit and pricing strategy and policy under the direction of the board and CEO, supports the bank’s strategic plan, chairs the bank’s credit management committee and subcommittees, and reports the bank’s credit profile, strategy, risks and opportunities to the board of directors. This position establishes credit policy and procedures, provides structure and direction, oversees credit modeling and credit review, and authorizes credit decisions within Nelnet Bank. The CCO reviews and updates loan policy to maintain overall credit quality, directs all lending activities, ensures appropriate collections practices, fraud management, and other credit-related functions. The role analyzes and presents loan loss reserve calculations for approval, sets pricing for credit products, and collaborates with the parent company to analyze loan portfolios and risk across credit portfolios. It also leads data analysts and professionals responsible for developing credit models, with a focus on the bank’s unique products and regulatory interactions. This position offers a hybrid work option, with remote work part of the week and in-office presence in Draper, Utah, three days per week. Nelnet values flexibility and work-life integration. Collaborate with the CEO in setting and driving organizational excellence to strengthen the bank’s credit management profile while delivering exceptional customer experience, strong employee satisfaction, and shareholder value. Chair the Credit Committee and participate in related committees. Provide reporting and analytics for ALCO, Risk and Compliance, CRA Committees, including CECL, Stress Testing, Model Risk, and standardized credit risk metric reporting. Manage best practices to align with the bank’s risk tolerance and goals. Establish and own bank credit risk management strategies, policies, and procedures covering originations, pricing, account management, delinquencies, collections, workouts, and recoveries, aligned with the risk appetite framework. Develop robust automated loan review processes to ensure adherence to credit, risk, and compliance policies. Hire and retain a team of credit professionals with industry and credit expertise. Recommend adequate reserve levels for loan portfolios and deploy CECL methodology with the CEO and CFO. Collaborate with the parent company to analyze loan portfolios and risk across portfolios and stay aware of regulatory changes and external factors affecting strategic goals. Develop and ensure adherence to sound underwriting practices, laws, and regulations; manage lending operations, collections, and fraud activities. Oversee loan risk management to monitor quality and minimize losses; review and approve loans as required by policy. Inform the President/CEO, Board of Directors, and Credit Committee of material considerations affecting the loan portfolio or policy; align with Risk Management, Compliance, and Internal Audit. Review portfolio performance for anomalies and policy exceptions and recommend improvements; embrace AI to enhance underwriting, monitoring, and reporting. Collaborate with the parent company on consistent reporting of delinquency, loss, and cohort performance; leverage shared resources and tools. Develop and execute data-driven scorecards that achieve strong credit performance across diverse economic cycles. Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Finance, or other technical field. Advanced degree and certifications are a plus. Experience
20+ years of broad-based consumer and commercial banking experience, including senior executive leadership in a highly regulated environment with direct interaction with regulators and boards. Competencies – Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
In-depth knowledge of designing and executing credit strategies focused on risk-balanced asset growth and P&L performance. Extensive banking and regulatory relations experience. Excellent written and oral communication; ability to project a professional image. Ability to manage multiple priorities while leading teams and collaborating across the organization. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with goal-oriented mindset. Aptitude for learning and deploying new technologies. Effective interpersonal skills to work with individuals and groups at all levels; ability to work independently or as part of a team. Initiative, time-management, organization, and problem-prevention abilities. Knowledge of banking rules, regulations, and policies; strong analytical ability with active listening skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Proven experience developing and improving sophisticated credit strategies including data-driven scorecards. Compensation and Benefits
Salary range for this position is $200,000–$325,000 commensurate with experience.
