System Modeling Engineer, Energy Storage
About Redwood Materials Redwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling—keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2019, we’re delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have. Overview
System Modeling Engineer, Energy Storage. This role focuses on developing a Multiphysics modeling platform to drive the system design of a novel energy storage system. Models must be robust for multiple users and agile to support a diverse array of design decisions. Responsibilities
Contribute to Redwood Material’s in-house performance and technoeconomic model. Drive architectural studies to explore the cost and performance design space. Produce component-level sensitivity analysis to enable globally optimal cost and performance tradeoffs. Use models to produce repeatable results for stakeholders to drive product architecture and site-specific deployment decisions. Parallelize the modeling framework to utilize cloud computing resources for faster results. Lead model validation efforts by writing test plans, coordinating with test engineers, and using data to correlate the model. Effectively communicate modeling results to drive architecture and performance initiatives. Qualifications
An MS or PhD in Mechanical Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or a BS with 2+ years of related work experience. Strong first-principles physics understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, power delivery, energy storage and transformation, and basic thermal mechanics. Experience collaborating in software projects with multiple contributors. Hybrid or electric powertrain model development, PV model development, or data analysis in Python or MATLAB/Simulink. Familiarity with basic controls techniques (filters, PID controllers, system identification). Experience with optimization techniques. Ability to write clear and testable engineering requirements. Strong communication and collaboration skills. Physical Requirements
Ability to perform essential job functions safely and successfully with ADA, FMLA and other applicable standards, including meeting productivity standards. Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance as required by applicable standards. Working Conditions
