Tradesman III
Position Summary Specializes on at least one skilled trade including plumbing, carpentry, welding, etc. Constructs, maintains, and repairs facilities and infrastructure. Provides essential preventive and repair care in and around the perimeter of all properties with various skill trades. May serve as supervisor of personnel assisting in completion of jobs.
Key Responsibilities/Duties Plumbing Specialty:
Plan, implement, install, repair, and maintain all plumbing fixtures, sewer, fire suppression and domestic water systems
Remove, clean, reinstall or replace joints and fixtures, such as traps, faucets and unions
Clean out, repair leaks and make modifications necessary for various appliance installations
Receive work orders, oral instructions and sketches that provide information on work to be done
May operate ditching machinery and install clay, plastic, and cement pipe
Welding Specialty:
Perform general fabrication and welding as needed by others in maintenance, including repairing water meter hatches and fabricating parts and bracing for plumbers, welding flange posts, and fabricating brackets and braces
Weld and prefabricate metal parts as specified by sketches, blueprints or work orders
Lay out position, align and fit components together; bolt, clamp, and tack-weld work pieces to secure in position for welding
Set up equipment and operate welding unit
Dismantle, straighten, reshape, and reassemble work pieces, using cutting torch and other hand tools
Examine welds of proper penetration and size of bead
Carpentry Specialty:
Perform residential and construction grade carpentry work as required
Responsible for repairs to buildings and railroad tracks
Repair concrete, asphalt, and floor covering
Install and/or repair fencing and gates for Homeland Security
Install / repair, and replace doors and hardware
Build cement forms
Install and repair roof / Paint, Sheetrock, and perform various hardware repairs on different types of buildings
Perform duties involving moving furniture, storm drain maintenance, and plumbing and various other facility maintenance activities
All Specialties:
Work required scheduled overtime hours and be available for unscheduled overtime when operating requirements or other business needs of Port Houston cannot be fulfilled during regular working hours
Work a temporary, alternative schedule or shift as requested by supervisor
Act in accordance with Port Houston core values (respect, excellence, accountability, diligence, and you)
Perform other duties as required
Education/Experience
High School diploma or GED equivalent required
5+ years maintenance experience required
License or certification in specialty, if applicable, required
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Behaviors
Knowledge of plumbing industry
Knowledge of Port Houston safety rules and procedures
Knowledge of industrial painting
Knowledge of general construction
Certified welding certificates
Verbal and written communication skills
Decision making skills biased on Port Houston requirements / needs
Ability to operate a forklift
A current, valid Texas driver's license is required
A Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) must be obtained within 30 days of appointment, and be maintained for the duration of employment
