GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Assistant Director of Content and Communications at the Rustandy Center for Social Sector Innovation serves as a writer and editor, contributing to high-quality, brand-aligned content across digital and print channels. This role helps shape the center’s voice across leadership messaging, stewardship reports, and mission-driven storytelling—ensuring clarity, consistency, and alignment with the center’s tone. It requires exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills; strong attention to detail; and the ability to adapt tone for different speakers and contexts. This position drafts speeches, newsletters, blog posts, and research-driven content—translating complex ideas, including academic research, into clear, compelling messages. The successful candidate will manage multiple deadlines, collaborate across teams and refine content based on performance and audience insights. The role is accountable for delivering communications that support the center’s goals and editorial standards.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Draft, edit, and proofread high-quality content across formats and channels, including newsletters, blog posts, social media, website copy, speeches, leadership communications, stewardship reports, and event collateral.

Helps translate complex ideas—including academic research—into clear, accessible content for diverse audiences.

Manage the center’s social media platforms (LinkedIn, Instagram, and X), including drafting, scheduling, and publishing posts in collaboration with the Director of Marketing, Communications, and Brand.

Write, edit, and proofread content produced in-house and in collaboration with university partners and vendors ensuring clarity, consistency, and adherence to editorial standards.

Maintain and update website content in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Event and Program Marketing, ensuring all content is current, accurate, and optimized for SEO and user engagement.

Manage the editorial calendar for storytelling content across social media and the website, ensuring timely progression from draft to publication.

Draft speeches and talking points to support leadership communications and stewardship efforts, in collaboration with the Director of Marketing, Communications, and Brand.

Develop blog posts and digital content that highlight Rustandy Center programs, events, and the experiences of students, partners, and community members.

Contribute to the Rustandy Center’s monthly newsletter by drafting research-based blurbs that translate academic insights into accessible, audience-friendly summaries.

Contribute to the development and execution of integrated content strategies that support the center’s research, programs, events, and mission-aligned messaging.

Monitor and analyze content performance using tools such as Adobe Analytics and Sprinklr; share insights and recommendations to guide future content.

Stay current on trends in social impact, digital engagement, content marketing, SEO, and audience behavior to inform evolving practices.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Reporting Relationship Director of Marketing, Communications, and Brand

Measures of Success

Produces high-quality content that reflects the center’s voice and editorial standards, with success measured by accuracy, clarity, consistency, and alignment across formats.

Delivers content that drives engagement with the center’s research, programs, and mission, demonstrated by relevant performance metrics (e.g., social media engagement, newsletter performance, website traffic) and tracked through the center’s goal-setting process.

Manages multiple content deliverables and editorial workflows efficiently, consistently meeting deadlines and maintaining high standards of quality.

Builds collaborative relationships with internal teams and partners, contributing to shared goals and receiving positive feedback from stakeholders.

Translates complex ideas—including academic research—into compelling, audience-appropriate content, reinforcing the center’s credibility and storytelling approach.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, public relations, or related area required.

Minimum of two years of experience in content development, writing, and editing within a brand, agency, media, or nonprofit environment required.

Demonstrated excellence in writing, editing, and proofreading across formats and audiences.

Meticulous attention to detail, particularly copy editing and managing multiple deadlines.

Strong editorial judgment and storytelling ability, with experience translating complex topics—such as academic research—into accessible content.

Experience developing story ideas and conducting interviews to inform clear, compelling, narratives.

Accountability for tone, clarity, and brand alignment across deliverables.

Skilled in writing and adapting engaging copy for social media across platforms.

Familiarity with SEO principles and integrating keywords into digital copy preferred.

Experience contributing to content strategies across digital and print platforms is a plus.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with Sitecore, Sprinklr, Marketo, Airtable, and Adobe Creative Suite preferred.

Strong organizational and time-management skills; ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines independently.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with faculty, students, and partners to support content development.

Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively within a fast-paced, cross-functional team environment.
