Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists in the preparation and completion of patient charts and records.
- Oversees the activities of surgical technicians in the operating room.
- Before each surgery, ensures that all necessary equipment and instruments are readily available.
- Assists the surgical team in scrubbing up and donning sterile gowns and gloves.
- Checks patient’s vital signs and responsiveness prior to surgery and reports any irregularities to the surgeon and anesthesia providers.
- Ensures the Center’s safe surgery checklist is implemented in the operating room prior to the start of surgery.
- Throughout procedures, monitors the patient’s conditions and needs of the surgical team. As necessary, leaves the operating room to gather additional supplies or equipment required by the team.
- After procedures, inventories all instruments and supplies used during the procedure and oversees needle and sponge counts, reporting any irregularities immediately to the surgeon.
- Assures that tissues taken for testing are properly prepared and labeled for the Center’s pathology laboratory.
- Oversees cleaning of operating rooms between procedures and terminal cleaning of operating rooms.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Maintains familiarity with and abides by the Center’s policies and procedures.
- Supports and participates in the Center’s quality improvement program.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Reads, speaks, and understands the English language.
- Possesses competence and character consistent with the Center’s mission and objectives.
- Possesses visual and hearing acuity, with or without correction.
- Possesses eye-hand coordination to move and operate equipment and instruments.
- Able to stand, stoop, kneel, and crouch and to lift, pull, turn, and ambulate patients up to 20 times per day.
- Can move quickly in crowded conditions.
- Understands medical terminology and aseptic principles.
Education, Experience, Licenses, and Certifications
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required
- Current State of Michigan licensure required
- BLS certification required, ACLS and PALs certification required within 6 months of hire
- At least 1 year of Operating Room Circulating Required
- Orthopedic experience preferred
- Scrubbing experience preferred
