- Repairs diesel and gas engines, including automobiles, trucks, lawn equipment, loaders, chainsaws, etc.
- Repair Major power train components such as transmissions, differentials, transfer cases, clutches and drive shafts.
- Reads blueprints, electrical charts, and diagrams to determine electrical procedure on how a device functions to properly install or repair/troubleshoot 12 & 24-volt electrical systems.
- Installs brake shoes, air brake chambers, hydraulic brakes, suspensions, valves, etc.
- Diagnoses actual causes of malfunctions and performs repairs as needed.
- Repairs Major hydraulic components on large equipment (grader, loaders, backhoes, etc.) such as hydraulic cylinders, valves, pumps, and load sense systems.
- Performs engine tune-ups and maintenance work on diesel and gas engines, including computer-controlled systems such as replacement of spark plugs, fuel filters, and air pollution equipment.
- Installs items such as snow plow frames and sanders, underbody scrapers, wiring including lights, and hydraulic systems.
- Keeps the working area, tools, and toolboxes neat and clean.
- Prioritizes work, maintains schedules, and meets deadlines.
- Performs repair, and fabrication on road department buildings and related facilities.
- Makes service calls in the field, returns vehicle to garage for repair or otherwise assists in the repair process. May operate towing vehicle if necessary.
- Uses welding, cutting torch, and brazing equipment to fabricate new or old equipment such as snow plows, graders, and trucks.
- Performs body, paint, and sheet metal work as required.
- Repairs steering components such as power steering, tie rods, steering gear boxes, drag links and idler arms.
- Repairs and/or replaces tires.
- Works with and assists fellow mechanics to ensure coordination of duties, productivity and efficiency.
- Follows MIOSHA & CCRD safety rules and using provided safety equipment.
- Maintains paperwork to record the use of inventory and other items of equipment.
- Reviews equipment records and ensures the accuracy of maintenance activities.
- Participates in classes and training sessions when available or needed.
- Performs other duties and projects as assigned.
- The job requires as a minimum the completion of a standard high school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a specialized mechanic training preferred.
- Specialized or technical training equivalent to the first year of college in vocational technology, automotive maintenance, or the equivalent.
- Three to five years of experience as a mechanic. Experience in maintaining and repairing road operation vehicles preferred.
- State of Michigan Master Auto/Truck Certification preferred, possession of a valid Michigan Operators License, CDL, Class B with Air Brakes, and DOT Physical Card.
Working Conditions
- Frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to vibrations.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and requires hearing protection.
- Occasionally works outside, discomfort due to heat/cold, dust, wet and/or humid conditions.
- Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
- Extended work days (beyond eight hours/day) are frequently required. Must be able to work overtime as needed.
- On-call availability to handle emergencies/crisis situations at all hours is occasionally required.
- Will occasionally be required to push, pull, carry, bend, twist, stand for extended periods of time, work on equipment with arms overhead, and lift items weighing up to 50 lbs.
