Overview

Job Title: Entry-Level Electrical / Mechanical / Instrumentation Technician

Assignment Length: 1 year (with potential extension)

Location: Portsmouth, VA (local candidates preferred)

This is a developmentally focused role on the Substation Equipment team. The position provides hands-on technical assistance with the installation, maintenance, testing, and repair of high-voltage electrical equipment across substations and power stations. Candidates with backgrounds in electrical, mechanical, electronics, or instrumentation technology are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

• Assist with installation, maintenance, testing, and repair of high-voltage substation equipment.
• Support procurement of materials, spare parts, and specialized tools.
• Work outdoors in energized substation environments, ensuring safe operation of HV and diagnostic test instruments.
• Collect and analyze test data to confirm adherence to manufacturer performance criteria.
• Perform administrative tasks including test data entry, work order documentation, and parts acquisition.
• Under senior guidance, perform testing and troubleshooting during equipment commissioning and maintenance.
• Assist with substation ground grid testing and analyze results for grid integrity.
• Support transformer filling, oil processing, and operation of mobile transformer processing rigs.
• Ensure compliance with safety and training requirements.

Required Skills & Experience

• 0–1 year of related technical experience (internships, co-ops, or hands-on coursework accepted).
• Strong initiative to learn and acquire new technical knowledge.
• Reliable and consistent with proven teamwork and collaboration skills.
• Effective verbal and written communication abilities.
• Ability to work safely in outdoor environments and travel to substations.
