Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Department Languages & Cultural Studies, Anthropology and Sociology at Eastern Kentucky University invites applications for full-time 9-month Lecturer in American Sign Language and/or Interpretation Studies with teaching and service responsibilities beginning Jan. 1, 2026.

The position begins Jan. 1, 2026. Primary responsibilities include teaching undergraduate level American Sign Language (ASL), Deaf studies, and/or interpretation courses. Faculty will teach primarily using a traditional face-to-face modality, with online synchronous or asynchronous formats used from time to time. Applicants eligible for the Lecturer position should:

  • Hold an earned master’s degree (or higher) in American Sign Language Teaching, Interpreter Education, Deaf Studies or a related field from an accredited institution at the time of appointment
  • Hold appropriate national professional certifications (e.g., RID, ASLTA, or other related certifications recognized by the Kentucky Licensure Board of Interpreters) OR have a minimum ASL Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) rating level 4, or an ASL: Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) rating level of “Superior” and obtain ASLTA certification within 2 years of initial employment for continuation of a contract

In addition to a typical teaching load, the successful non-tenure-track candidate will participate in service to the department, college, and university.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Hold an earned master’s degree (or higher) in American Sign Language Teaching, Interpreter Education, Deaf Studies or a related field from an accredited institution at the time of appointment.

Experience:

  • Native or near-native fluency in American Sign Language
  • College/university and/or P-12 experience
  • Team-oriented approach due to curriculum scope and sequence
  • Faculty are expected to be accountable, self-directed, and lifelong learners

Licensure & Certifications: Hold appropriate national professional certifications (e.g., RID, ASLTA, or other related certifications recognized by the Kentucky Licensure Board of Interpreters) OR have a minimum ASLPI rating level 4 or SLPI rating level of “Superior” and obtain ASLTA certification within 2 years of initial employment for continuation of a contract.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Superior ASL proficiency
  • 5 years teaching experience in higher education

  • Maintain a typical teaching load, teaching courses as assigned at the times and locations necessary to meet the needs of EKU students - (Essential)
  • Utilize effective teaching methods, innovative teaching techniques, and multiple evaluation and assessment procedures to meet student needs - (Essential)
  • Demonstrate the ability to teach, develop, and implement courses related to one’s curricular area - (Essential)
  • Academic advising as assigned - (Essential)
  • Support continual informal/formal curriculum alignment and enhancements - (Essential)
  • Collaborate with the ASL Lab staff - (Essential)
  • Collect and report program review and accreditation assessment data - (Essential)
  • Actively participate in service to the department, college, and university - (Essential)
  • Keep up to date with one’s field and curricular areas by reading current scholarly or creative works and by attending conferences, seminars, workshops, courses, and faculty development activities - (Essential)
