Position Purpose

According to established procedures, performs repetitive cleaning tasks in order to maintain the assigned hospital area in an orderly and sanitary condition. Moves furniture, equipment, and supplies in and around hospital departments and performs a variety of heavy and light housekeeping duties. Utilizes Seven-Step cleaning; dry and wet mops floors; strips and buffs floors; shampoos carpets and removes stains from floors, walls, furniture, and the like.

What You Will Do

  • Receive cleaning assignments and request cleaning materials and supplies (mops, buckets, electric buffer, vacuum cleaner, rags, disinfectants, etc.) from designated areas; mix cleaning solutions and transport materials to work areas.
  • Clean assigned areas by washing furnishings, tile, fixtures and equipment with germicidal cleaning solutions; scour and polish sinks, tubs, toilets, mirrors, and the like.
  • Strip, clean, and make beds with fresh linens after patient dismissal; clean other furniture and dispose of refuse; restock soap, tissues, towels, and other disposable items.
  • Sweep and mop limited floor areas (e.g., patient rooms and hospital offices); vacuum carpets; spot clean carpets; arrange furniture and equipment after cleaning; operate buffing equipment on large floor areas.
  • Clean and perform routine maintenance on sanitation equipment and notify supervisor of needed repairs.
  • Visually inspect area upon completion to ensure cleanliness and neatness.
  • Return unused supplies to the utility room; clean carts and equipment and store items orderly.
  • Perform heavy-duty cleaning of floors and carpets, including stripping and shampooing as required.
  • Wash, scrub, and disinfect walls, windows and doors; determine methods for removing stains using appropriate equipment and supplies.
  • Gather refuse from various hospital locations and transport to the loading area; segregate bagged refuse according to sanitation procedures.
  • Move furniture and equipment (e.g., mattresses, beds, cribs) using handcarts or dollies.

Working Conditions

  • Careful handling of equipment and procedures where carelessness could result in minor injuries or strains.
  • May require wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as masks, eye protection, ear protection, gloves, and gowns.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend basic written instructions in English; ability to understand verbal instructions and respond in English.
  • 3+ months of cleaning experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
  • Ability to safely move, lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs. individually; analytical ability to read and understand instructions and perform basic math.
  • Ability to work with cleaning chemicals in a safe manner.
  • Must be able to perform repetitive motions such as sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, and dusting.
