Job Summary The Transcriptionist is responsible for accurately converting audio and video recordings into written documentation for inclusion in the patient medical record. This role requires exceptional listening skills, keen attention to detail, and a strong command of grammar and punctuation to ensure high-quality, error-free transcripts that meet organizational standards and client specifications. The Transcriptionist works closely with the external transcription vendor to coordinate workflow and resolve issues, and serves as the primary contact for physicians and providers regarding transcription-related concerns. This position also ensures the timely delivery of transcribed documentation to support patient care and promote clinical efficiency.
What you will do Accurately transcribes, proofs, and finalizes medical records, reports, correspondence, and specialized documents, ensuring precision, confidentiality, and timely completion. Maintains and organizes patient files and physician records, verifying accuracy and ensuring proper routing and secure accessibility. Responds to phone inquiries, provides routine information, and collaborates with medical staff to coordinate patient charts and documentation. Acts as a resource for physicians and other providers regarding transcription issues, helping resolve discrepancies in patient documentation. Adheres to medical records policies and established procedures for document handling, ensuring confidentiality and regulatory compliance. Participates in meetings and committees while pursuing ongoing education and training to strengthen professional skills and knowledge. Assists in developing and updating transcription policies and procedures. Works with IT, HIM, and administrative leadership to resolve documentation challenges.
Education Qualifications High School Diploma and/or GED Required
Experience Qualifications 1-3 years Prior experience in transcription, data entry, or clerical work is a plus Preferred
Skills and Abilities Exceptional listening, comprehension, grammar, punctuation, and typing accuracy, with the ability to maintain focus during repetitive tasks. Proficiency with transcription software, word processing tools, and, when applicable, specialized terminology (medical, legal, technical). Strong organizational, time management, and research skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and maintain confidentiality.
Licenses and Certifications Certification in medical or legal transcription Preferred
