About the team and the role Data flows swiftly within our marketplace to support real-time interactions among buyers and sellers worldwide. Our Rheos team provides a fully managed, continuously scaling stream processing and messaging data platform that enables near real-time buyer experiences, seller insights, and a data-driven commerce business. We are seeking an experienced Software Engineer with deep expertise in data streaming and event-driven systems such as Apache Kafka and Apache Flink. You will develop, build, and operate the core data pipeline infrastructure that underpins eBay’s most critical applications. This role blends platform engineering—developing new features, automation, and tooling—with operational ownership including cluster management, performance optimization, and troubleshooting. You’ll help ensure distributed systems are reliable, scalable, and efficient, collaborating with a world-class team to redefine how information moves through one of the largest commerce platforms in the world. What You Will Accomplish

Build, operate, and optimize eBay’s messaging and streaming platform for reliability, scalability, and high performance at global scale. Develop and implement new functionalities on the platform and automation tools to boost system resilience and improve developer efficiency. Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues with a focus on minimizing downtime and maintaining business continuity. Strengthen system monitoring, logging, and alerting to enable proactive detection and resolution of problems. Create and maintain documentation, including system designs, runbooks, and best practices to support long-term platform health. What You Will Bring

5+ years of relevant experience with a Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent experience). Strong proficiency in Java and common design patterns. Hands-on experience with streaming and messaging technologies such as Apache Kafka, Flink, and Pulsar. Proven problem-solving skills and experience troubleshooting production issues. Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools like Grafana, Prometheus, and ELK. Experience with Kafka and Flink cluster operations is a plus. Strong knowledge of Kubernetes and containerized environments. Familiarity with databases such as Oracle, MySQL, and Redis. Deep understanding of distributed system design principles, including high availability, scalability, and fault tolerance. Compensation and Benefits

The base pay range for this position is $132,000 - $222,100. Base pay offered may vary depending on location, skills, and experience. The total compensation package may include a target bonus and restricted stock units, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits such as PTO and parental leave). Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an offer of employment is made. If hired, employees will be in an at-will position and the company reserves the right to modify base salary and other compensation programs at any time, including for individual performance or market factors.
