Position Overview The Vice President of Ceded Reinsurance will lead all aspects of the company’s ceded reinsurance strategy, execution, and operations. This leader will be responsible for designing and negotiating final reinsurance structures that support profitable underwriting growth, managing reinsurance and intermediary relationships, and ensuring compliance with contractual and regulatory obligations. The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of reinsurance markets, fronting arrangements, captive arrangements, quota share and excess-of-loss treaties, and capital optimization in a complex fronting model.
Responsibilities The individual will be responsible for the following:
Reinsurance Strategy & Program Design
Lead the development, placement, and management of a diversified reinsurance program, including:
Excess of Loss (XOL) programs – structure and negotiate per-risk, per-occurrence, and aggregate covers for property, casualty, and specialty lines.
Whole account quota share treaties – design and manage reinsurance programs that span multiple MGAs, product lines, or portfolios.
Catastrophe reinsurance – in coordination with the lead property underwriter and actuarial teams, assess exposure accumulations and procure catastrophe excess-of-loss treaties and/or industry loss warranties (ILWs) to mitigate peak peril risk (e.g., hurricane, earthquake, wildfire).
Stop-loss and aggregate covers – evaluate and structure aggregate protection for volatility control, capital relief, and earnings stability.
Reinsurance Placement & Market Engagement
Develop and maintain strong relationships with applicable reinsurance brokers, reinsurers, and alternative capital providers (e.g., ILS funds, sidecars).
Collaborate with lead program underwriters to successfully place program facilities and ensure market acceptable terms, pricing, limits, attachment points, exclusions, reinstatement provisions, and collateral agreements.
If not program specific, manage placement timelines, exposure data submissions, and reinsurer Q&A processes in partnership with underwriting and actuarial teams.
Portfolio & Risk Management
Monitor reinsurance effectiveness and performance through data analysis, stress testing, and scenario modeling.
Coordinate with actuarial to develop pricing and exposure models that inform reinsurance strategy, including PML (Probable Maximum Loss) and AAL (Average Annual Loss) analysis.
Evaluate portfolio shifts, growth plans, or MGA onboarding initiatives for reinsurance adequacy and capacity alignment.
Support the Chief Credit Officer to monitor reinsurer financial strength, credit quality, collateral arrangements and counterparty risk across the panel of reinsurers.
Support Finance and Credit teams with AM Best and BCAR modeling
Operational Oversight & Compliance
Partner with the finance to maintain appropriate booking and accounting of reinsurance assets and liabilities.
Ensure timely and accurate execution of treaty documentation, cession statement reporting and all reinsurance settlement activity.
Oversee adherence to contract terms, including claims notifications, cession limits, retention levels and profit share adjustment calculations and settlements.
Assist Operations to implement reinsurance system and workflow tools to improve data quality, transparency, and auditability of ceded reinsurance operations.
Regulatory, Legal & Governance
Ensure reinsurance structures meet risk transfer criteria under statutory, GAAP, and rating agency frameworks.
Collaborate with legal to negotiate treaty wording and resolve contract disputes or interpretation issues.
Prepare reinsurance program summaries, risk reports, and compliance documentation for regulatory filings, reinsurer audits, and internal governance committees.
Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration
Act as a key contributor to enterprise risk and capital strategy by aligning reinsurance with business planning and underwriting execution.
Support the onboarding and integration of MGA/MGU programs by advising on appropriate reinsurance support, structuring, and capital usage.
Mentor and develop team members in reinsurance best practices, market engagement, and technical structuring.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Risk Management, Finance, Actuarial Science, or a related field; MBA or CPCU/ARE/CIP designation preferred.
Minimum 10+ years of experience in ceded reinsurance, preferably in a fronting or hybrid carrier environment.
Deep understanding of quota share and XOL structures, collateralized reinsurance, MGA/MGU partnerships, and alternative capital solutions.
Strong negotiation, relationship management, and communication skills.
Some knowledge of regulatory environments (NAIC, state DOI, Bermuda, etc.) and relevant legal/accounting/tax implications.
Experience with reinsurance systems, data analytics, and treaty administration platforms.
Demonstrated ability to drive strategic initiatives, manage change, and adapt to a dynamic and evolving industry landscape.
Modest travel is required.
