Overview
Center for Victims of Torture (CVT) seeks a bold, visionary President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead a complex portfolio including trauma-informed clinical care, global programming, advocacy, innovative research, and capacity-building initiatives. The CEO will drive CVT’s strategic direction, strengthen organizational sustainability, and elevate CVT as a global authority in torture rehabilitation and prevention. This role offers the opportunity to directly impact lives across continents, empowering communities and transforming systems to end torture and support survivors.

Organization The Center for Victims of Torture (CVT) is a globally recognized leader in torture rehabilitation and human rights advocacy. CVT heals survivors of torture and advocates to end CIDT. Founded in 1985, CVT provides trauma-informed mental health services and multidisciplinary rehabilitative care to survivors in the United States, Africa, and the Middle East, while supporting families and communities to broaden the circle of healing. CVT also offers training and consultation to other torture rehabilitation centers, engages in advocacy at local, national, and international levels, and expanded training on secondary trauma and resiliency for legal and medical professionals working with asylum seekers and survivors of systemic injustice.
Purpose of the Position The President and Chief Executive Officer will lead a mission-critical portfolio and be the driving force behind CVT’s strategic direction, strengthening sustainability and elevating CVT’s voice as a trusted global authority in torture rehabilitation and prevention. This role enables direct impact across continents, with efforts to empower communities, transform systems, and mobilize support from donors, policymakers, frontline staff, and global partners. The ideal candidate brings cross-cultural fluency and trauma-informed, survivor-centered leadership, with a proven track record in fundraising across individual, public, and private sectors. They will have served as a compelling spokesperson and global thought leader, demonstrated operational excellence, and shown a deep commitment to human rights. Experience collaborating with Boards of Directors and guiding organizational change is essential. Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership and Vision
Innovate and champion CVT’s strategic direction, aligning programs, finance, technology, and culture to accelerate impact. Collaborate with the Board and senior leadership to refine and execute a multi-year strategy expanding access to survivor services and prevention initiatives. Advance CVT’s brand and narrative on domestic and global stages. Develop and diversify relationships with public and private sector partners to unlock resources and programmatic reach. Assess and redesign leadership structure and staffing to support sustainable growth and high-quality program delivery. Evaluate risks and opportunities across policy, funding, and humanitarian landscapes and adapt strategies with rigor.
External Engagement and Relationship Development
Engage in fundraising strategies and identify opportunities for diversified, sustainable income. Pursue sustainable funding from government contracts, philanthropy, foundations, and earned revenue. Represent CVT at domestic and international forums and cultivate high-value relationships. Oversee campaigns that exceed targets and mobilize new constituencies of support. Strengthen CVT’s presence in policy spaces as a trusted thought leader. Coordinate with the CFO to ensure financial integrity and accountability across funding initiatives.
Governance and Board Engagement
Partner with the Board to strengthen leadership and align governance with strategic goals. Lead strategic planning retreats with the Board and senior leadership to define priorities for the next 12–24 months. Keep the Executive Committee informed of challenges, opportunities, and operational developments. Expand the Board’s resource development capacity through fundraising and partnerships. Engage Board members in fiduciary responsibilities and advocacy to advance CVT’s long-term vision. Lead Board participation in shaping new institutional strategies.
Operational Oversight
Champion an inclusive, trauma-informed workplace and embed diversity, equity, and inclusion as a strategic advantage. Align budgets to priorities, steward reserves, and enable bold innovation and risk assessment. Recruit, mentor, and retain a high-performing leadership team delivering operational excellence.
