Brief Description

The Senior Director of Supply Chain is a key leadership role responsible for both the strategic direction and tactical execution of AvKARE/R&S Northeast’s pharmaceutical wholesale and virtual manufacturing supply chain. Covering five business segments—EMS, Animal Health, Institutional, Government, and Retail—the role ensures compliant, reliable, and efficient end-to-end operations. This position is remote; however, candidates must live within commuting distance of our Fountain Run, KY location (8407 Austin Tracy Rd, Fountain Run, KY 42133) to attend periodic on-site meetings, training, or team collaboration sessions.

This position provides oversight of demand planning, procurement, vendor/repackager coordination, inventory optimization, order fulfillment, and distribution activities, while ensuring compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements. The Sr. Director balances day-to-day operational accountability with long-term strategic planning, driving service-level achievement, continuous improvement, and cost-to-serve optimization across the organization.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Demand Planning & Inventory

Execute demand planning processes to align forecasts with purchasing, inventory targets, and customer service level requirements. Develop strategic and tactical plans to improve productivity, quality, and efficiency of operations. Monitor and optimize inventory health, including turns, days sales of inventory (DSI), days on hand, and obsolete prevention. Ensure OTIF (on-time, in-full) delivery and service-level adherence across all customer segments.

Procurement & Vendor Management

Direct procurement strategies, ensuring alignment with contract terms and vendor/repackager capabilities. Build and maintain relationships within the company and with external parties such as suppliers, repackagers, and distributors. Read and comprehend legal documents, such as contracts, pricing agreements, and import/export agreements. Maintain supplier scorecards and conduct reviews to track quality, on-time delivery, and responsiveness.

Compliance & Risk

Ensure adherence to all applicable federal and state regulatory requirements (e.g., licensing, DSCSA). Partner with Quality/Regulatory to maintain audit readiness, recall protocols, and temperature-control standards.

Continuous Improvement

Lead process improvement initiatives to increase efficiency, reduce cost-to-serve, and improve accuracy. Apply Lean/Six Sigma tools to optimize workflows and eliminate waste.

Leadership & Cross-Functional Alignment

Translate company strategy into supply chain operational execution. Review operational reports and develop presentations to help senior management understand supply chain performance and logistics perspectives. Collaborate across diverse departments to identify problems, implement corrective actions, and escalate strategic risks to executive leadership. Apply principles of accounting and finance in supply chain decision-making. Manage and develop the supply chain team to improve efficiency, service levels, and cost impacts of inventory management. Develop and mentor supply chain leaders, building a pipeline for succession and growth.

Qualifications

Strategic & Tactical Leadership – Translates company objectives into operational execution while ensuring day-to-day supply chain performance. Demand & Inventory Management – Skilled in forecasting, demand planning, inventory optimization, and managing key metrics such as turns, days sales of inventory (DSI), and OTIF service levels. Procurement & Vendor Partnerships – Strong ability to manage supplier and repackager relationships, negotiate agreements, and oversee lead times. Regulatory Compliance & Risk – Knowledgeable in applicable federal and state pharmaceutical requirements, ensuring operational and audit readiness. Operational Excellence – Applies Lean and continuous improvement methods to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance service. Analytical & Financial Acumen – Data-driven decision-making with a solid foundation in accounting principles, reporting, and performance metrics. Collaboration & Communication – Works effectively across finance, sales, contracting, regulatory, and customer service, with strong communication and relationship-building skills. Leadership & Talent Development – Builds, coaches, and develops high-performing supply chain teams, fostering growth and accountability.

Supervisory Responsibility

Directly manages supply chain managers and leads across planning, procurement, warehousing/distribution, and analytics. Accountable for performance, staffing, and budgets.

Required Education And Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Business, Operations, or related field required; MBA or Advanced degree preferred. 10+ years of progressive supply chain leadership, with 5+ in regulated pharmaceutical distribution/wholesale. Proven track record in both day-to-day supply chain operations and long-term strategic planning. Strong background in demand planning, procurement, distribution, and compliance. Experience implementing or optimizing ERP/WMS systems and BI reporting. Familiarity with Lean/Six Sigma or other process improvement methodologies.

Travel

This role requires at least 20% travel to company locations, supplier facilities, and industry events to support strategic initiatives, ensure operational alignment, and foster collaboration with internal and external partners.
