Position Overview The General Manager is responsible for leading through Petco’s vision of “Healthier Pets. Happier People. Better World.” to develop a high-performing team that delivers top-line sales growth while ensuring the welfare, health, and proper care of all animals. The GM leads a team of Pet Care Center managers, leaders and partners and is accountable for all aspects of managing a single Pet Care Center. The General Manager drives business through a focus on people (talent acquisition, training, and development), performance (guest service, sales, and expense control), and process (standard operating procedures and policies), resulting in overall profitability. This role requires a passion for pets, the ability to inspire and lead a team, a focus on process excellence, and a drive for results.
Position Responsibilities The GM regularly exercises discretion and independent judgment as they execute all Pet Care Center activity to create the best possible partner, guest, and pet experience. As a leader of people & pet care, the GM should execute all tasks skillfully and consistently. Attract, hire, and retain a diverse team of top talent.
Train, coach, and develop leaders and hourly Pet Care Center partners in all areas and functions required to run the store efficiently and to Petco standards, including the effective rollout selling models.
Create a professional environment that inspires and encourages growth and engagement of partners.
Lead and implement a positive culture of teamwork and collaboration by working alongside the team, establishing priorities, and providing clear direction.
Ensure quick and courteous service to all Petco guests by helping partners determine guest needs and by sharing product knowledge to enable appropriate solutions.
Manage partner performance and drive continuous improvement and growth mindset.
Performance
Meet or exceed goals related to total Pet Care Center sales, profitability, and operational excellence.
Schedule and adjust labor hours and payroll to maximize productivity and achieve sales and payroll goals.
Review and interpret financial and operational reporting regularly, including Pet Care Center visits and audit results.
Identify underperforming metrics and develop strategies using Petco programs and resources to improve and grow the business.
Market the Pet Care Center and its products; oversee on-site and community events, such as adoptions, school visits and local promotions and animal-welfare events.
Process
Ensure the proper health, appearance, welfare, and proper handling of all animals.
Ensure merchandise is properly priced, displayed and stocked according to inventory levels and store guidelines; adjust merchandising decisions as needed to align with visual standards and monthly ad planner guidelines.
Complete and submit accounting, inventory management and payroll paperwork in a timely manner; ensure expenses stay within budgeted levels.
Maintain the Pet Care Center’s appearance in line with operational standards and safety procedures.
Protect Petco pets and merchandise, minimize loss, and comply with safety, inventory control, and loss prevention standards.
Open/close the Pet Care Center in accordance with policies and procedures, prioritizing safety and security.
Maintain a professional image, appearance, and cleanliness of the Pet Care Center.
Other Essential Duties
Model inspiring leadership and selling behaviors; provide proactive leadership to maintain a positive business climate aligned with company goals.
Promote safety; ensure policies, procedures and safety standards are observed and implemented, with safety of partners, guests and pets as a top priority.
Foster a collaborative culture; encourage ideas to increase efficiency and improve guest engagement and satisfaction.
Prioritize talent development; maintain a strong talent bench and ensure ongoing development through internal and external programs.
Engage and be present; represent Petco’s brand with high standards in a positive, fun working environment.
Education And Experience
High school diploma or equivalent; proficiency in basic business and finance, analysis and problem-solving, and a strong focus on people development and guest service.
Excellent communication and computer skills.
Three or more years of management experience or the equivalent; previous retail management experience preferred.
Working knowledge of general business practices and strong organizational skills.
Strong customer service orientation and ability to guide others; professional appearance and genuine interest in animals.
Must be licensed to operate a motor vehicle. Some internal candidate requirements may apply.
Supervisory Responsibility The General Manager directly supervises a team of leaders and is responsible for all Pet Care Center partners and services.
Work Environment The majority of duties are indoors; occasional stocking, customer carry-outs and bank deposits may require time outside the store. This role involves physical activity including bending, kneeling, lifting up to 50 pounds, and standing for long periods. A limited amount of travel may be required.
