People & Team Leadership
Lead 10-15 engineers across one or more Agile squads; grow high‑performing, inclusive teams
Hire, onboard, mentor, and develop engineers/tech leads; drive career paths, feedback, and succession planning
Foster a culture of ownership, learning, psychological safety, and continuous improvement
Delivery & Execution
Own end‑to‑end delivery for roadmap commitments (scope, schedule, quality, risk)
Establish and track engineering OKRs and DORA metrics (lead time, deployment frequency, MTTR, change fail rate)
Run Agile ceremonies effectively; remove impediments; ensure predictable velocity and outcome‑based planning
Manage on‑call rotation, incident reviews (PIRs), and production readiness
Engineering Excellence
Champion cloud‑native patterns (12‑factor, microservices), API‑first design, and automated testing (unit/integration/e2e)
Drive CI/CD, trunk‑based development, and gated releases; improve reliability via observability and SLIs/SLOs
Enforce coding standards, code reviews, and documentation; reduce tech debt with measurable targets
Architecture, Security & Compliance
Partner with architects on scalable, cost‑efficient designs (multi‑AZ, Kubernetes, messaging/streaming, caching)
Embed security by design (DevSecOps, SAST/DAST, secrets mgmt, vulnerability remediation); ensure HIPAA/PHI compliance
Promote privacy, data governance, and audit readiness; adopt platform guardrails and reusable components
Stakeholder & Business Leadership
Collaborate with Product/Design to define scope, prioritize value, and align on success criteria
Communicate status, risks, and decisions crisply to senior stakeholders; influence via data‑driven insights
Manage vendor partners (if applicable); uphold SLAs and quality standards
Financials & Operations
Track cloud and tooling spend; drive FinOps and cost‑per‑transaction optimization
Budget for headcount, licenses, and capacity; ensure efficient utilization
Report operational health: uptime, error budgets, incident trends, quality and SLA adherence
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent practical experience)
10+ years in software engineering with 3+ years in people management (managing engineers and/or team leads)
Production experience with one or more: .NET/Node and modern frameworks
Hands‑on with cloud (AWS), containers (Docker, Kubernetes), IaC (Terraform), and CI/CD (GitHub Actions/Azure DevOps)
Solid grasp of distributed systems, APIs (REST), messaging/streaming (Kafka/RabbitMQ), and relational/NoSQL data stores
Solid Agile delivery leadership; excellent communication, coaching, and stakeholder management skills
Preferred Qualifications
Healthcare tech experience (claims, clinical, provider, payer) and familiarity with HIPAA/PHI, HL7/FHIR
Observability tooling (Dynatrace/Datadog, New Relic, Prometheus/Grafana, ELK/Splunk); SRE practices and SLO management
Security practices (OWASP Top 10, SAST/DAST, SBOM, secrets mgmt, runtime security)
Data & analytics exposure (Snowflake/BigQuery, Spark, event streaming, CDC) and/or ML/MLOps basics
Experience leading platform modernization (microservices from monoliths, domain‑driven design, event‑driven architectures)
Proven success managing vendor/partner engineering teams across time zones
At UnitedHealth Group, our mission is to help people live healthier lives and make the health system work better for everyone. We believe everyone - of every race, gender, sexuality, age, location and income - deserves the opportunity to live their healthiest life. Today, however, there are still far too many barriers to good health which are disproportionately experienced by people of color, historically marginalized groups and those with lower incomes. We are committed to mitigating our impact on the environment and enabling and delivering equitable care that addresses health disparities and improves health outcomes - an enterprise priority reflected in our mission.
