Overview

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) serves as a member of the executive leadership team responsible for managing and controlling all financial-related activities to improve and maintain the financial health of the council. The CFO is accountable for ensuring achievement of the overall strategic plan and meeting budget parameters. This position oversees the Finance department to ensure it operates efficiently and effectively while supporting the mission of Girl Scouts and complying with federal and state guidelines. The CFO supports the work of the Board of Directors by serving as the Council lead responsible for preparing reports and analysis to support effective governance and decision-making for the Finance Committee, Investment Committee, and Audit/Risk Management Committees. The CFO works collaboratively with all departments to develop long-term financial strategies and to support efforts to meet the mission of Girl Scouts of Gateway Council with available resources.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Executive Support: Supports the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in leading the development of the Council’s budget and operating plan; ensures resource allocation and utilization reflect and facilitate the achievement of the council’s strategic plan; provides counsel on fiscal policies and long-term financial matters.

Board Engagement: Serves on board committees and prepares reports and analyses to support governance and decision-making.

Departmental Leadership: Provides leadership and oversight of the Finance department in alignment with the aim to provide the premier girl leadership experience.

Finance Operations: Manages finance and day-to-day operations to ensure accurate and timely processing of financial transactions and reporting, aligned with accounting standards.

Cross-Department Collaboration: Ensures collaboration across departments to support product sales, retail, and program experiences for girls and volunteers; supports fundraising and membership goals.

Governance & Compliance: Supports Board Finance, Audit/Risk Management, Investment committees and external auditors; identifies and manages business risks and insurance requirements in collaboration with the COO.

Payroll & Human Resources Collaboration: Works with Human Resources to support payroll processing and acts as final approver for bi-weekly payroll.

Relationship Management: Cultivates and manages the Council’s banking, endowment, and investment management relationships.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities: Manages all financial transactions, records, policies, and procedures to protect sustainability and ensure adherence to GAAP and nonprofit regulations.

Budget & Performance Monitoring: Administers and monitors operating plans and budgets, analyzes results, initiates corrective actions, and minimizes variances.

Financial Reporting: Prepares and issues financial statements and reports for the Board, CEO, and Executive Team.

Compliance & Audit: Ensures operations comply with GAAP, local/state/federal/not-for-profit regulations and oversees audits and regulatory filings (e.g., IRS Form 990s and 5500).

Process Improvement: Identifies opportunities for improved efficiencies and supervises improvements to internal controls and operating procedures.

Culture & Inclusion: Demonstrates cultural competence and fosters diversity, equity, inclusion, and access through actions and communication.

Other Duties: Performs additional duties as necessary or assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Strong strategic planning, problem solving, and project management with attention to detail.

Ability to leverage data-driven critical thinking to inform business decisions.

Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Travel up to 20% of the time within the council jurisdiction.

Own transportation with a valid operator license.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree or higher (or equivalent experience) with at least 10 years of related work experience, including at least 6 years in a leadership role. Advanced degree preferred.

Demonstrated ability to foster cross-functional collaboration and inclusion.

Proven track record managing teams through strategic execution and achieving goals at the C-Level.

Experience in fund accounting or nonprofit accounting preferred.

Experience managing operating budgets of at least $10 million.

CPA or MBA preferred; executive team and board experience preferred.
