Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, in the Chemistry Lab department. Perform Chemistry lab tests, operate state-of-the-art instruments, and conduct esoteric tests with current technology. Responsible for quality control, instrument maintenance, and method development to support a broad menu of routine and esoteric tests, including diagnostic tests for infectious diseases and allergy identification. Operate within UChicago Medicine's Department of Pathology, providing reference laboratory testing to various health care entities and organizations. Offer a full range of diagnostic services. This department is in the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory. This position is on-site 100% and you will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area. Essential duties Routinely performs a wide range of clinical analyses in all sections of the laboratory using various methodologies and instrumentation according to policies and procedures and regulatory requirements. Receives specimens, determines suitability for analysis, and ensures proper storage and handling for specimens not immediately analyzable. Prepares specimens for analysis (e.g., centrifugation, aliquotting) and distributes prepared specimens to appropriate sections. Demonstrates knowledge of techniques, principles, instruments, and physiological factors affecting test results. Provides patient-focused care through accurate performance of routine and complex tests across pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic stages. Maintains compliance with policies, procedures, and record-keeping to meet accrediting/regulatory standards. Participates in training and continuing education for laboratory personnel and learners; assists in new testing, procedures, and equipment validation and implementation. Answers inquiries regarding specimen handling and results; assists clinicians with requests and uses resources to provide information. Performs procedures under CLIA’88 for moderate or high-complexity testing and adheres to laboratory manuals for quality and turnaround times. Maintains safe use of equipment, following maintenance, safety, and quality control policies. Prepares and maintains stock of reagents, standards, and controls; communicates shortages to supervisor. Analyzes test and quality control results for errors, initiates troubleshooting, and documents resolution. Reports results in the laboratory information system within turnaround times and follows backup procedures during downtime. Communicates pertinent information with laboratory staff and supervisors in a respectful, proactive manner. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Must satisfy CLIA ‘88 qualification requirements for testing personnel performing high complexity testing Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science or related field from an accredited college or university Certification or eligibility as medical technologist (MT) through ASCP or equivalent Knowledge and ability to use automated and conventional laboratory equipment and testing methodologies Knowledge and ability to use laboratory/hospitals information systems Exceptional organizational ability, with attention to detail Ability to work in high volume, stressful situations Preferred Qualifications At least one year of pertinent laboratory experience in a Chemistry lab Position Details Job Type/FTE: Full-time (1.0) Shift: Evening Shift + Rotating Weekends/Holidays Work Location: Hyde Park Unit/Department: Clinical Chemistry Lab CBA code: Non-Union Why Join Us
