Responsibilities

  • Functions as a laboratory professional who performs specimen collection techniques including venipuncture, capillary draws, urine collection instruction, and specimen culture collection instruction.
  • Promotes professionalism and interacts with colleagues in a way that supports a cooperative working environment.
  • Ensures specimens are obtained in accordance with laboratory guidelines.
  • Demonstrates proper communication skills to relay pertinent data about the patient or laboratory sample to the appropriate care provider.
  • Supports organizational priorities to maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Attains required competency and follows procedural directions and protocols.
  • Prioritizes and organizes workload and assists other coworkers to maintain productivity.
  • Follows proper protocols for specimen packaging and transport.
  • Responsible for specimen accessioning as assigned.
  • Demonstrates proper infection control practices, patient identification, and prompt specimen transport.
  • Performs proper drug screen collection and processing as assigned.
  • Answers laboratory department phone calls.
  • Demonstrates ability to recognize emergent conditions and reacts appropriately.
  • Provides phlebotomy services in a professional and patient-centered manner.
  • Engages in self-evaluation of practice and takes action to improve knowledge and skills.
  • Retains accountability for quality of care given to the patient.

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent

Preferred Job Requirements:

  • Completion of an accredited phlebotomy/medical assistant program with clinicals or previous phlebotomy experience
  • Certification from nationally recognized agencies (examples include):
  • National Heathcareer Association - CPT (NHA)
  • National Heathcareer Association - CCMA (NHA)
  • American Society for Clinical Pathology - PBT (ASCP)
  • American Medical Technologists - RPT (AMT)
  • National Center for Competency Testing - NCPT (NCCT)
  • American Certification Agency - CPT (ACA)
  • Experience working in the clinical setting
