Health New Orleans is seeking motivated applicants for the title of Morgue Technician 1, 2 or 3. This position is included in a Career Progression Group. As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a Morgue Technician 1, 2 or 3 depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant.

The daily operation of the Bureau of Anatomical Services ( BAS ) is performed within the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy. The Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy within the

LSU

Health Sciences Center, School of Medicine, is a large Basic Science department with missions in research and education. The

BAS

is responsible for processing the anatomical donors for

LSUHSC

as well as those for Tulane University Health Sciences Center.

Position Summary: Human cadavers are used as a primary teaching tool in our basic anatomy courses and in postgraduate education courses. On average, the

BAS

prepares between 300 and 400 donors each year. The

BAS

processes and provides cadavers or cadaver specimens (human body sections) for all

LSUHSC

Schools (Medical, Nursing, Allied Health and Dentistry), the University of Tulane Uptown and Downtown campuses, Ochsner Hospital, Delgado/Charity School of Nursing, and

LSU

Baton Rouge Department of Kinesiology, in addition to providing cadaver specimens which are used in training residents and practicing physicians in postgraduate education courses.

Under the direction of the Morgue Supervisor, the incumbent will be responsible for preparing human cadavers, including drawing blood, embalming and dissection, for use in on and off-campus courses; assists with the setup, breakdown, cleaning and restocking of the lab for courses; maintains cleanliness of coldboxes and morgue; operates the crematory, crushing ashes and bones and preparing them for return to the family or burial; maintains complete and accurate records of anatomical donations, including embalming dates, distribution, utilization, cremation and final disposition of cadaveric remains; transports cadavers to in-house departments and affiliated institutions; manages and disposes of hazardous chemicals related to the embalming process; and acts as an ambassador for the

to the public and is an advocate for the donor

Louisiana Department of State Civil Service

Starting rate is $16.06 for the Morgue Tech 1, $17.18 for the Morgue Tech 2 and $18.38 for the Morgue Tech 3 with an additional $1 Longevity Pay for hours worked only. Rate may be increased dependent upon applicants’ qualifications.
