Starting Pay: $25.28 - $28.42 per hour

Position is located at Trans Jordan Transfer Station located at 8813 South 700 West, Sandy, Utah.

SUMMARY OF BENEFITS (FULL -TIME PERMANENT POSITION)

Transfer Station Heavy Equipment Operator 2

Summary / Objective

Under general supervision from the Transfer Station Manager and Operation Supervisors, performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation of light and heavy-duty equipment used at the waste transfer station.

Duties / Responsibilities

Solid Waste Operations:

  • Proficiently operates assigned equipment such as: Excavator, Loader, and Terminal Tractor.
  • Effectively performs tasks in waste disposal functions such as:
    • Use technical skill and correct operating techniques to process waste in the most effective and productive manner
    • Efficiently load trash transfer trailers to maximize hauling capacity
    • Operates equipment providing efficient and safe service to customers.
  • Assists with the recovery of recyclable materials.
  • Performs complete daily walk around (pre-trip and post trip) to ensure equipment and vehicles are operable and ready for use (i.e. check fluids, fire system, etc.). Complete corresponding form on fast fields program.
  • Cleans cabs, performs routine maintenance (i.e. grease, use air compressor on radiators), may assist the mechanic in maintenance and repair of assigned equipment.
  • Clear out all debris from excavator tracks and loader wheels daily
  • Reports mechanical problems for shop repair; field tests repaired equipment to ensure operating efficiency.
  • Performs visual and verbal inspection / verification of vehicles and solid waste to prevent the disposal of hazardous or unauthorized waste; items that may jeopardize safety and equipment; notifies management if hazardous waste is found.
  • Follows standard operating procedures in handling of fuel, oil, and grease to prevent personal injury.
  • Utilizes specific firefighting techniques in controlling and fighting refuse fires.
  • Accepts and oversees specific projects as assigned
  • Provides guidance and example to Hybrid Operators, Equipment Operator Trainees and Heavy Equipment Operator 1 employees on equipment operation and procedures

Waste Site Spotter:

  • Performs duties for traffic control / waste disposal as outlined in the Waste Site Spotter job description

Safety:

  • Follows all written and non-written safety standards to ensure personal, co-worker, and customer safety
  • Performs all job duties in a manner to ensure employee and customer safety
  • Notifies Supervisor of potentially harmful or unsafe situations
  • Wears appropriate PPE as directed

Other:

  • Uses equipment, tools, and technology provided to complete tasks (i.e. radio, tablet, fast field program)
  • Performs vehicle inspections (pre and post trips) with corresponding paperwork submission (fast field program)
  • Responsible for proper care and maintenance of equipment, tools and vehicles assigned
  • Follows policies, procedures, and directives as given by management
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned or duties in other job descriptions, as qualified

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum High School graduate or equivalent and four (4) years’ experience as an equipment operator OR any equivalent combination of experience and education (above High School Degree).

Special Requirements

  • Valid Utah driver’s license and remain insurable
  • Must pass a Trans-Jordan Physical, Drug Screen, and Background Check
  • May be called upon for emergency response
  • Must successfully pass equipment operation proficiency exam.

  • Working knowledge of minor equipment maintenance up to and including repair

Working Conditions & Physical Attributes

This position may include frequent lifting up to 25 lbs, occasional lifting up to 50 lbs and carry 25 lbs up to 100 feet.

This position requires that the person stand continuously and sit or walk with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, and working on irregular surfaces and uneven ground; a full range of motion in the shoulders, arms, hands, wrists, legs, and feet; and manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; visual acuity as needed to inspect loads

Must work in extreme conditions with constant exposure to traffic hazards, noise, dust, fumes, grease, unsanitary conditions, and possible extreme weather.

Essential Functions

Essential functions of this position include the ability to effectively and safely perform the duties listed above in solid waste operations section for a full shift). The position may work outside in extreme weather conditions. The nature of these duties cannot be performed in a different location or environment.
