Job Summary

The heavy equipment operator shall possess skills to operate a variety of contractor equipment and trucks used in construction, maintenance and repair activities and perform semiskilled tasks in the maintenance of light, street, and storm drainage systems.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions

  • Heavy Equipment Operator Level I: Operates trucks of various sizes and weights in loading, hauling, and unloading equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Level I: Must be competent in safety and understand OSHA excavation guidelines.
  • Operates basic construction equipment and power tools, such as mechanized broom, man-lift, dump truck, hydraulic excavators, skid steers; and small equipment like jackhammers, mowers, and brush chippers.
  • Shoots grades; assists line crew in digging ditches and trenches; hoists materials with backhoe, road grader or front-end loader.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment; cleans equipment; assists in installing and maintaining traffic control devices.
  • Compliance with safety and security standards.
  • Level I Preferred Education and Experience: 1-3 years of prior heavy equipment and construction experience.
  • Heavy Equipment Operator Level II: Operates trucks and construction equipment (e.g., mechanized broom, backhoe, man-lift, dump truck, road grader, front-end loader, hydraulic excavators, skid steers, scrapers, dozer); continues safety practices per OSHA guidelines.
  • Works with line crew in digging ditches and trenches; operates backhoe/front-end loader; performs inspections and maintenance; assists in traffic control.
  • Additional skills: GPS, shooting grades, basic math, soil classification.
  • Level II Preferred Education and Experience: 3-6 years of heavy equipment experience.
  • Heavy Equipment Operator Level III: Similar duties with broader equipment operation (including motor graders, excavators, dozers, etc.); may include finishing and grading, GPS, civil drawings interpretation, soil classifications; shoots grades and performs math.
  • Level III Preferred Education and Experience: 3-6 years of heavy equipment experience.
  • Heavy Equipment Operator Level IV: Operates a wide range of equipment including non-CDL trucks; performs finishing and grading, GPS, and interpretation of civil drawings; snow plowing, salting roads, and more extensive duties.
  • Level IV Preferred Education and Experience: 10-15 years of heavy equipment and construction experience.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervision responsibilities.

Work Environment

Typically outdoors; exposure to weather, moving mechanical parts, wet or humid conditions, and noise. Occasional exposure to fumes, chemicals, and electrical hazards.

Physical Demands

Regularly required to handle, operate, and favorably manipulate objects; must be able to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally and up to 10 pounds frequently; vision and depth perception required.

Travel

Local travel to various worksites is required.

Required Education and Experience

  • Graduation from high school or GED
  • Four years of experience involving heavy equipment, with at least two years related to utilities or street systems
