SUMMARY: Unit Information Secretaries work in the nursing area of hospitals. They are primarily the conduit for information management and processing, to ensure the operations of the unit. Responsibilities

  • Coordinate unit activity, main point of contact between unit and transport, ancillaries, and physicians.
  • Answer all calls by identifying department and name.
  • Monitor new orders – transport and ancillary orders, test additions, and communicate to the appropriate nurse.
  • Maintain and update physician pager numbers monthly for nurses, essential during downtime.
  • Report telephone problems and route issues to Communications; escalate to Director/Supervisor as needed.
  • Maintain a list of phone numbers of physicians in the area.
  • Monitor patient arm bands for accuracy and contact registration/admissions for replacements as needed.
  • Maintain stock of lab/x-ray requisitions for downtime.
  • Report printer and computer problems and coordinate with help desk; inform Director/Supervisor.
  • Provide and track data (e.g., page to MD and response, discharge information) as requested for department flow.
  • Order and maintain accurate par levels for inventories.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe environment and intervene appropriately.
  • Notify charge nurse, Director/Supervisor of patient concerns following proper procedures.
  • Initiate and track facilities, BioMed, housekeeping and IT work orders; arrange repairs as needed.
  • Notify BioMed of malfunctioning equipment and track repair/return of equipment to the department.
  • Copy charts and other materials as requested.
  • Maintain compliance with BLS, TB, Fit testing and other minimum job requirements.
  • Participate on committees as requested and support quality improvement projects as directed.
  • Respond to staffing needs by cross-training and floating to other units; assist in filling staffing holes as directed.
  • Complete work assignments within an acceptable time frame; develop efficient working relationships.
  • Maintain reliable attendance; contribute to team efforts to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Ensure quality services; provide creative solutions and strive for continuous improvement.
  • Monitor paper documentation for dates, times, and signatures; keep nursing desk tidy and current.
  • Organize workspaces as requested by department leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Certified Nursing Assistant Certification
  • Demonstrates computer knowledge
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Customer service skills
  • High School Education
  • Ability to assist lifting and carrying up to 20 lbs
  • Ability to sit for an extended period

Preferred Qualifications

  • College degree preferred
  • Previous experience in role preferred
  • Meditech knowledge preferred

$18.86-$27.53
