Educational Assistant I, II, III (American Sign Language) - Hawaii School for the Deaf and Blind
These positions are open to Educational Assistant I, II, and III levels at the specified location. The authorized level is Educational Assistant III. Applications are being accepted down to Educational Assistant I in the event of recruiting difficulties.
Salary Range
- Educational Assistant I, SR-10: $3,019.78 per month
- Educational Assistant II, SR-12: $3,260.76 per month
- Educational Assistant III, SR-14: $3,526.98 per month
Examples of Duties
- Within a classroom setting, independently performs a variety of academic and non-academic instructional tasks in accordance with established guidelines and available resources.
- Provides paraprofessional support services to students with disabilities and assists teachers, both special education and general education, in the delivery of educational and behavioral interventions. May independently provide academic, social, vocational, and daily living instruction to students with disabilities in a school and/or community setting to enable them to function as independently as possible. Adjusts to student needs as required.
- Serves as a paraprofessional assistant in the delivery of counseling support services and activities for identified students. Participates as a member of the school support team and provides activities prescribed to reduce specific academic, behavioral, or social needs.
Minimum Qualifications
Basic Education Requirements: Applicants must possess a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent AND one of the following minimum education requirements as described by the No Child Left Behind Act:
- 48 semester credits from an accredited institution of higher education recognized by the Hawaii Department of Education (3 credits in math and 3 credits in English).
- An Associate in Arts (AA) or Science (AS) degree or higher with a minimum of 48 credits at the baccalaureate level.
- Successful completion of the ParaPro Assessment provided by the Education Testing Service (ETS).
Experience Requirements: Except for substitutions, applicants must have experience described below. See the table for level-specific requirements.
- Educational Assistant I: 0 General and 0 Specialized years
- Educational Assistant II: 1 General year, 0 Specialized years
- Educational Assistant III: 1 General year and 1 Specialized year
General Experience: Direct interaction with people, ability to organize materials, maintain records, and describe occurrences briefly. Awareness of basic educational programs may be gained through school/community activities.
Specialized Experience: Direct contact with students, including student management, familiarity with common student problems, use of instructional materials and services to support educational, counseling, or guidance tasks.
American Sign Language Requirement: These positions require the ability to use American Sign Language effectively.
Driver's License Requirement: Some positions require possession of a current, valid driver's license.
Lift and Carry Requirements: Some positions require the ability to lift up to 65 pounds and/or up to 100 pounds with assistance.
Substitutions of Education for Experience
- Certificate of Completion in Child Services or related program may substitute for one-half year of General Experience.
- 15+ semester credits toward AS or related degrees may substitute for portions of General or Specialized Experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or equivalent may substitute for all General and Specialized Experience.
- Professional Diploma in Education or equivalent may substitute for all General and Specialized Experience.
