Assistant Professor of Theatre Design & Production
Utah Valley University invites applications for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Design to join our faculty in the Department of Theatrical Arts for Stage and Screen beginning August 2026. The successful candidate will be a dynamic and skilled pedagogue and/or professional practitioner able to teach, mentor, and inspire in the areas of stage or production design or management. Stage Management applicants would teach courses in stage management as well as mentor stage management students and contribute to the production management of the department's productions. Courses taught in the design area could include any of our design classes, such as Intro to Design, Costume Design and/or Construction, or Stage Makeup. All candidates could be asked to teach a generalist class, such as Intro to Theatre, as well as any other courses a candidate may be qualified to teach. Qualified candidates may be asked to design for the department's season as part of the workload. Candidates are encouraged to think broadly about courses they are qualified to teach and are not expected to be able to teach all the course examples listed.

Position Announcement: Utah Valley University School of the Arts invites applications for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Design to join our faculty in the Department of Theatrical Arts for Stage and Screen beginning August 2026.
Responsibilities
- Teaches assigned courses in the design area. Prepares and follows an approved course of study with measurable objectives. Prepares instructional materials such as course outlines, syllabi, exams, audio/visual aids, and other instructional materials as necessary. Instructs, manages, and supervises individuals and groups in the classroom and studio by the following methods: demonstration, discussion, visual aids, audio aids, video-conference, and field trip/community engagement. Evaluates instruction and learning by means of written, oral, practical, and performance tests. Maintains a student-oriented and engaged approach to education. Maintains and submits accurate and current reports and records regarding student grades, attendance, accountability, and follow-up. Mentors student designers through the production process. Candidates may be asked to design for the department as part of the workload. Establishes and maintains office hours and advises students during this time and at other times as needed; assists advisors, department chairperson, faculty, and department staff in maintaining an effective program, including curriculum development. Aids design emphasis students with preparation for Grad School and professional interviews.
- Devotes time to creative/scholarly/professional activities. Improves professionally and maintains currency in the courses taught by reading and utilizing materials found in theatrical and professional publications. Keeps abreast of new performance development trends and techniques through participation in workshop seminars, actual work experience, and exchange programs with business and industry to maintain skills and knowledge.
- Devotes time to service on committees for the Theatre Department, the School of the Arts, and the University.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications
MFA or equivalent terminal degree in Theatre Design, Production Management, or Stage Management, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- University teaching experience.
- Experience with student recruitment.
- Experience with engaged learning opportunities (such as study abroad programming).
- Professional experience in Theatre Design.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Knowledge
- Knowledge in current instructional theory, methods, strategies, and techniques in the theatrical design area of specialty.
- Knowledge in student management, motivation, and evaluation techniques.
- Knowledge of current industry practices, including aspects of AI.
- Knowledge of current industry practices in the candidate's area(s) of design and production.
- Familiarity with the following programs is preferred: SketchUp, Adobe Photoshop, and Excel.
Skills
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

- Ability to teach and mentor multiple levels of design and production.
