Sieda Community Action is seeking a reliable and motivated full-time custodian to maintain the cleanliness and safety of our various facilities. The successful candidate will travel daily in Ottumwa to two centers and visit an outer county site once weekly. They will be responsible for upholding high standards of sanitation and maintenance, ensuring a safe and hygienic environment for staff and visitors.

This position will work Monday through Friday.

JOB TITLE: Custodian UNIT: Economic and Family Support Services

REPORTS TO: Resource Center Supervisor FLSA STATUS: NE

SUMMARY:

The custodian position is responsible for overall cleaning, light maintenance, and routine upkeep of Sieda Community Action facilities.

DUTIES: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Clean and sanitize restrooms/bathrooms using established practices and procedure.
  • Clean, dust, and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers; empty and clean ash trays and cigarette urns; replace light bulbs; refill restroom dispensers.
  • Clean hard surface floors, vacuum and shampoo carpets.
  • Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies. Use as directed by manufacturers.
  • Perform cleaning and related activities such as removing snow or debris from sidewalks and outside of buildings using hand-operated tools or power equipment as requested.
  • Move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools on an incidental basis.
  • Wash accessible interior and exterior windows. Clean blinds. Launder cleaning rags and dust mops.
  • Attend to emergency cleaning and maintenance when necessary.
  • Handle and dispose of trash and recycling materials appropriately.
  • Assist with inventory control and security.
  • Safely operate job-related equipment.
  • Assist with the setup of facilities for meetings, classes, conferences, events, etc.
  • Lock and unlock buildings, secure building when facilities are not in use checking for unlocked doors and windows, report any unauthorized occupants, turn off lights.
  • Submits documentation as required in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Maintains full familiarity with all Sieda policies and procedures, and reports to the Resource Center Supervisor and/or EFSS Director any deviations from these guidelines.
  • Complete light maintenance and repairs as assigned by the Resource Center Supervisor, Unit Director or Executive Director.
  • Other duties determined necessary to support the goals of the agency.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

  • Receives on-going supervision regarding task guidelines and completion.

DECISION-MAKING AUTHORITY:

  • Limited independent decision-making authority.

ADDITIONAL TRAINING:

  • Obtain specific training required by Sieda guidelines.
  • Participates in pre-service, in-service/other trainings, staff meetings, and committee work as required. Provides recommendations as requested.

PROGRAM REPRESENTATION:

  • Requires a limited level of interaction with staff and customers.

PROGRAM DESIGN AND PLANNING:

  • Involved in the planning of a limited area reflective of his/her job responsibilities as requested.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Not responsible for direction/training for program personnel.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, stand, bend, reach, grasp, walk, move quickly, use hand to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move 75 pounds, climb stairs, climb ladders, pick up and move equipment.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close, distant and peripheral vision.

  • The work environment is both inside and outside.
  • The noise level of the work environment is usually moderate, but may increase with the use of tools and equipment.

OTHER:

  • Employees must pass a pre-employment state criminal record check, then successfully pass a state criminal record check periodically while employed.
  • Travel will be required both in and outside the service area. Proof of auto insurance and valid driving license is required.
  • Must be able to work some evening hours when requested.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skill, and/or ability required to be considered for this position.

FORMAL EDUCATION:

  • Requires completion of high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).

EXPERIENCE:

  • One year of janitorial, maintenance, or custodial work preferred.

TECHNICAL PROFICIENCY:

  • Requires basic level computer knowledge and experience with computer programs, including, but not limited to Google platforms, Microsoft Office, and Sieda databases to the extent needed for the position.
  • Must perform simple maintenance to keep devices operational.
