Overview
KIPP Texas Public Schools is a network of 54 public charter, open-enrollment, pre-k-12 schools educating nearly 32,000 students across Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. The Custodian is responsible for housekeeping, general cleaning, and other assigned tasks to maintain the cleanliness and safety of the school building and grounds. This is a full-time position with occasional night/weekend work and reports to the Campus Facilities Manager. The role supports the mission of KIPP by providing a clean, maintained, and safe learning environment for students and faculty.
Key Responsibilities
- Open facilities for use by the school: unlock doors, disable alarms, ensure climate control and lights are on, and perform a quick safety inspection
- Maintain a safe working environment for students and faculty
- Learn building systems such as the fire alarm, burglar, main shut-off, and electrical breaker systems
- Perform general cleaning duties: sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning entrance windows, restrooms, drinking fountains, white boards, removing trash
- Pick up trash on and around school grounds, including athletic fields
- Respond to emergency cleanups of various substances
- Operate, clean, and maintain equipment (mops, buckets, autoscrubber, etc.)
- Daily laundry duties (towels, mops, etc.)
- Perform floor work: stripping and waxing floors, sealing floors, extracting stains from carpets
- Perform small handyman duties (replace light bulbs, clean filters, paint, etc.)
- Assist with cleaning campus vehicle fleet, if applicable
- Move and rearrange furniture and assist with breakfast/lunch setups
- Check in weekly with Supervisor regarding supply orders and reporting issues with cleaning or equipment
- Attend meetings and training sessions as assigned
- Perform other job-related duties as requested
Qualifications
- Basic reading and writing; 0-2 years of housekeeping/janitorial experience, preferably in a school setting
- Strong work ethic with flexibility to accommodate multiple priorities
- Good manual dexterity and attention to detail; self-directed and able to work with urgency
- Ability to manage several tasks at once and proactively identify solutions
- Commitment to safety and operations of a campus environment
- Customer-focused attitude; resourceful and thrifty
- Willingness to learn; ability to lift and carry 20-50 lbs
- Proven written and verbal communication skills; basic computer skills preferred
- Fluent English preferred; not required
Compensation and Benefits
The starting salary for this position is $31k-34k, with placement in the salary range commensurate with experience and internal equity.
