Clinical Essential Functions

• Examines patient’s oral cavity and records conditions of the teeth and surrounding tissues.
• Refers patients to the dentist with anomalies such as decay or periodontal disease.
• Applies desensitizing agents and other topical agents as needed.
• Performs complete oral prophylaxis, including scaling, polishing, and applying topical fluorides.
• Exposes, develops, and mounts dental radiographs and interprets them to determine areas of calculus deposits or decay.
• Records medical history and treatment administered.
• Maintains integrity of dental instruments and disinfects operatories and sterilizes dental instruments.
• Instructs patients in proper oral hygiene care and demonstrates proper techniques.
• Adheres to all JST and JFDC policies and procedures, including safety and work practices.
• Maintains patient confidentiality.

Preventive

• Teaches the common causes of tooth decay and periodontal disease and the link between diet and overall health.
• Contributes articles to the monthly tribal newsletter and provides community health education.
• Acts as a liaison with Jamestown S’Klallam youth programs and the Sequim School District.
• Oversees community dental education activities.

Administrative

• Aids in compliance with hazardous material communications and infection control procedures.
• Assists in developing and implementing Dental Clinic policies and procedures.
• Assists with training of dental assistants and orientation of on-call staff.
• Attends dental staff meetings and performs additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Washington State Dental Hygienist License.
• Basic Life Support and First Aid certification.
• 15 clock hours of continuing education annually.
• Understanding of dental and oral anatomy, oral physiology, and nutrition.
• Skill in performing prophylactic procedures and providing individual and group instruction.
• Basic personal computer skills and ability to learn dental office software.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to travel locally and regionally.
• Valid Washington State Driver’s License and ability to pass a criminal background investigation.

Preferred Qualifications

• American Indian/Alaska Native preferences apply.
