Overview
Human Resources Director – Professional Services Firm
Chicago, IL | Hybrid – Onsite Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
Full-Time | Leadership Role | Reports to COO
$180,000 – $210,000 Base
This is a highly regarded mid-sized professional services firm seeking a Human Resources Director to lead its HR function through a strategic evolution. It is a high-impact leadership role designed for someone who can balance vision and execution — driving culture, policy, structure, and innovation while remaining hands-on in a collaborative environment. The current HR leader is retiring, and the firm is intentionally using this transition to elevate HR from reactive support to a proactive, data-driven function. This is a rare opportunity to build, modernize, and influence organizational strategy from the inside.
What You’ll Lead
- Own all HR operations, including payroll (ADP Workforce Now), compliance, benefits, and reporting.
- Develop and execute strategic HR initiatives tied to firm-wide business goals.
- Oversee talent acquisition for business professionals, support staff, and administrative teams.
- Lead performance management, compensation programs, and organizational change initiatives.
- Build HR metrics & analytics to drive decision-making.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to firm leadership, guiding employee relations and investigations in partnership with internal legal counsel.
- Manage and develop a small but high-performing HR team (HR Specialist + HR Coordinator).
- Conduct and analyze onboarding and exit trends to continually evolve culture and retention efforts.
- Partner with peer-level directors and participate in firm committees / external HR networks (SHRM, ALA, etc.).
What We’re Looking For
- 10+ years of HR experience, including 5+ years in a leadership role
- Prior law firm or professional services firm experience (3–4 years minimum)
- Proven ability to design policies and structure HR functions—not just maintain them
- Strong communicator with a kind yet direct style and executive presence
- Strategic AND hands-on — must be just as comfortable in leadership meetings as rolling up sleeves to execute
- Experience with ADP Workforce Now and change management preferred
Why This Role?
- Influence the future of HR at a respected, well-established firm
- High visibility to executive leadership and managing partners
- Autonomy and authority to rebuild processes, policies, and programs
- Stable yet modernizing environment — structured without the bureaucracy of large firms
