American Water is seeking a Director of Business Development & Government Affairs to lead the state and local government affairs program and develop new business opportunities for one of its state subsidiaries. About American Water American Water is the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the United States, providing safe, clean, reliable, and affordable drinking water and wastewater services to over 14 million people. Primary Role The Director will direct the state and local government affairs program, develop and implement strategies for advancing the company’s priorities, protect its business interests, and enhance its reputation. This includes overseeing resources responsible for contacting municipal and privately-owned water and wastewater operations to discuss acquisition, negotiate sales for resale contracts, and other related business opportunities. Key Accountabilities Oversee the lead state lobbyist and manage contract lobbyists to support the company’s legislative efforts. Direct local government affairs efforts and build relationships with elected officials and key stakeholders. Manage strategic communications efforts and support the Manager of External Affairs and major account engagement. Support federal government affairs efforts and build relationships with the state’s Congressional delegation and relevant federal agencies. Engage with external stakeholders to build strategic relationships and coalitions to support the company’s legislative initiatives. Actively participate in business, industry, civic, and community organizations. Attend business and industry conferences to develop expertise and build relationships with elected officials and key stakeholders. Manage fundraising efforts for the company’s state Political Action Committee. Key Accountabilities Cont'd Develop annual budget and contribution recommendations for the PAC board. Coordinate with EVP, Communications & External Affairs to align company communications. Work with legal and finance departments to ensure compliance with election laws and reporting requirements. Provide guidance on the political implications of various actions and relationships. Direct preparation of informational material, studies, and conclusions regarding potential business development opportunities. Lead team members responsible for Business Development and Government/External Affairs. Knowledge/Skills Strong leadership ability and strategic planning skills. Detail-oriented with ability to conduct thorough analysis and evaluations. Project and Program Management skills, Quantitative skills, and effective people management. Strong written and verbal communications and interpersonal skills. Leadership presence and ability to engage and communicate effectively with senior management and stakeholders. Excellent working knowledge of the legislative process and ability to testify before and effectively lobby legislative audiences. Demonstrated ability to manage budget resources efficiently and coach people to develop potential and build capabilities. Experience/Education Bachelor’s degree in public administration, government, journalism, communications, public relations, or related field preferred. Total work experience of around 15 years with around 7 years in business development, government relations, external affairs, or lobbying, preferably within the utility sector.
