Responsibilities

Provide direct support during ophthalmic surgeries, anticipating surgeon needs and assisting in procedures to ensure smooth and timely operations.

Organize and maintain the daily operations of the operating room, adhering to federal, state, accreditation standards, and facility policies.

Oversee and maintain surgical supply inventory, including ordering diagnostic medications and supplies, and ensuring availability prior to scheduled procedures.

Clean, inspect, and sterilize surgical instruments, arranging for repair or replacement when necessary.

Prepare and set up the laser room with all required supplies and sterile equipment before procedures.

Conduct routine and emergency maintenance of medical equipment to ensure optimal functionality.

Assist with patient education, including post-operative instructions and medication administration, as directed by physicians.

Demonstrate flexibility in assignments, providing support in different areas as needed.

Collaborate with the OR team in the training of new staff, providing guidance and sharing expertise.

Education & Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required; additional medical or surgical training preferred.

Minimum of 2–3 years of experience as a Surgical Technician in ophthalmology or another surgical specialty required.

Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) strongly preferred.

Solid working knowledge of eye anatomy, ocular diseases, surgical procedures (including cataract and LASIK), and ophthalmic medications.

Proficiency in sterile techniques, operating room protocols, and patient care standards.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build trust with patients, colleagues, and physicians.

Experience with femtosecond laser platforms (e.g., Lensar, Ziemer, Lensex) is highly desirable.

Ability to anticipate surgeon needs and take initiative during procedures.

Proficiency with charting protocols, medical abbreviations, and electronic health record systems.

Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask in a high-volume surgical setting.

Professional demeanor, reliability, and ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.

Strict adherence to HIPAA and OSHA guidelines.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand for extended periods during surgical procedures.

Frequent walking, bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting/moving equipment or patients (up to 40 lbs.).

Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to handle delicate microsurgical instruments.

Ability to wear PPE for prolonged periods.

Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment and respond quickly to surgical team needs.

May require occasional pushing or pulling of carts or stretchers within the surgical suite.
