Base pay range $81,000.00/yr - $269,000.00/yr
Description We are building a dedicated Life Sciences Underwriting team to launch Liberty Mutual's Life Sciences Industry Practice within the Middle Market. Our vertical, led by Tory Agnich, Chief Underwriting Officer, Middle Market Life Sciences, aims to deliver integrated multi-line Property and Liability insurance solutions for mid-sized companies (R&D stage through $2B insured product/service revenue) spanning biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, dietary supplements, analytical laboratories, digital health innovators, cellular and tissue-based products, and the broader ecosystem that supports these companies. The underwriter role supports a team focused on Life Sciences underwriting with access to Liberty Mutual’s product and service capabilities, working with Claims and Risk Control professionals to serve Life Sciences clients. This role offers a balance of renewal activity and a strong focus on new business, market expansion, and strategic business development. You will help develop, grow, and maintain a profitable multi-line Life Sciences book through marketing, underwriting decisions, agent/broker relationships, and the use of Life Sciences underwriting support tools. Travel up to 25% is expected. This role is hybrid: 2 days/week in office and 3 days/week work-from-home.
Responsibilities
New business underwriting for profitable growth: review, evaluate, underwrite submissions; assess risks; determine premium and terms; prepare proposals for agents/brokers; negotiate deals.
Service accounts after winning the business in coordination with Liberty Account Analyst and Client Service Managers; meet with insureds to uphold Liberty's value proposition.
Manage portfolio of brokers/agents and clients; build strong relationships to market products; conduct site visits and in-person renewal meetings; develop a long-term quality pipeline.
Identify, manage, and solicit a pipeline of opportunities for individual success.
Articulate key coverage differences in Life Sciences with technical detail.
Maintain knowledge of relevant legal cases, legislation, and regulations impacting underwriting in Life Sciences.
Share knowledge through external thought leadership; mentor, coach, and train other underwriters and partners.
Contribute to business and marketing planning with data-driven portfolio insights.
Participate in projects to grow Liberty's Life Sciences Industry Practice and drive underwriting/process excellence.
Collaborate across teams (Distribution, Operations, UW Support, Claims, Actuarial, Directors of Underwriting in North America).
Qualifications
Degree in Business, Risk Management, or Scientific Field or equivalent typically required
7+ years of progressive underwriting experience (typically 10+), with at least 5 years in Life Sciences underwriting
Professional designation such as CPCU preferred
Analytical ability to evaluate underwriting risks; strong knowledge of Life Sciences insurance products, coverages, and market dynamics
Proven track record of profitable Life Sciences underwriting
Ability to communicate complex analyses clearly to internal/external stakeholders
Strong interpersonal skills for dealing with stakeholders
Ability to manage complex underwriting issues and develop effective workflows
