QinetiQ US is looking to hire an experienced Senior Principal Motor Controls Engineer to support QinetiQ’s Maritime Solutions group at our Waltham, MA facility. The Senior Principal Motor Controls Engineer will design, build, tune, and troubleshoot end-to-end motor solutions for crewed/uncrewed robotic platforms and maritime systems. This includes component and system-level engineering tasks, including the analysis, design, and integration of different electromagnetic systems for defense and commercial applications. Systems can span from compact underwater propulsion units for UUVs to large maritime platforms and small to medium UGV robotics applications. Responsibilities
Work within and/or lead multidisciplinary teams of mechanical, electrical, software, and controls engineers to design and support complex automated systems Act as the primary contributor to new permanent magnet motor and generator designs driving execution Oversee the entire component lifecycle from proposal, concept design, prototype build, and production implementation Set technical objectives, resolve conflicts, and make decisions based on trade studies and requirements Design and develop new and novel features for existing products Troubleshoot and root cause challenging component and systems problems Support opportunity development providing critical SME guidance Required Qualifications
Master of Science degree or higher in Electrical, Mechanical, or Robotic Engineering or equivalent with 8+ years of related experience Experience developing ground up motor designs with Ansys and Maxwell simulation tools Experience implementing Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation schemes Familiarity with standard motor design specifications such as NEMA and IEC High DC Voltage application experience Design for MIL-STD power and EMI requirements Ability to see programs through from proposal to production Experience interfacing and collaborating with customers Must be able to obtain a DOD Secret Clearance Preferred Qualifications
Prior design work with small motors and/or large high-power motors Experience with CAD/Analysis programs such as Creo, Unigraphics, MATLAB, ANSYS, Mathcad, or similar Prior mentorship roles especially within an engineering setting Clearly communicate, orally and in writing, technical and programmatic information to technical and non-technical individuals Company EEO Statement
