Power Systems Studies Engineer (Principal or Senior) at Xcel Energy. Position at Xcel Energy; the level (Principal or Senior) will be determined based on skills and experience. The description reflects the principal engineer level; the candidate placed will be commensurate with their qualifications. Position Summary
Viewed as the technical engineer or subject matter expert for the organization in the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes in power systems modeling and analysis and/or transmission planning. Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts. Problems are approached through a series of complex and conceptually related studies, are difficult to define, require unconventional or innovative approaches, and require sophisticated research techniques. Responsible for major projects or several complex projects of moderate to large scope. Serves as a spokesperson on advanced projects/programs. Acts as an advisor to management and customers on advanced technical research studies and applications. Maintains contacts within and outside the organization for action on technical matters. Works under consultative direction toward broad goals and objectives. Assignments are often self-initiated and progress is guided by consultation and agreement with others. May provide work direction for a team of engineers and professionals as necessary to complete assignments. Strong communication skills are required to convey technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders in various formats.
Essential Responsibilities
Directs and runs power system studies and leads multiple complex projects simultaneously. Develops scopes for complex studies to guide long-range transmission system plans and coordinates with other Integrated System Planning departments. Work is self-directed and generally has wide-ranging ramifications for the business. Acts as a spokesperson within the Integrated System Planning group. Advises management and helps with workflow management within the department. Works as an established subject matter expert for modeling and analysis processes, procedures, and standards compliance; contributes to integrated modeling and analysis methods across generation/transmission and transmission/distribution boundaries. Supports and provides testimony in state regulatory processes and strategic direction for transmission system plans. Minimum Requirements – Principal Engineer
Bachelor’s degree in engineering and/or Physics from ABET-accredited curriculum (electrical engineering degree preferred) or recognized equivalency. 9+ years of demonstrated experience with PE registration, or 15+ years of demonstrated experience without PE registration. Experience with multiple power system transmission analysis tools (e.g., PSSE, TARA, EMS, ASPEN, CAPE, PROMOD, PLEXOS, PowerWorld, PSCAD or similar). EIT/FE preferred; PE registration preferred. Graduate degree in relevant fields preferred. PE registration preferred. Minimum Requirements – Senior Engineer
