The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for UnitedHealthcare's Technology team (UHCT) is a visionary and execution-focused leader responsible for driving enterprise-wide technology strategy, innovation, and transformation. They will ensure that UHCT's digital platforms, data systems, and AI transformation align with business goals to deliver affordable coverage, seamless member experience and high-quality care. The CTO reports to the CIO of UnitedHealthcare and collaborates closely with Optum Technology, business CIOs, and product leaders across Medicare & Retirement, Community & State, Employer & Individual, and ancillary lines of business. The role is pivotal in advancing UHCT's mission to deliver the most affordable coverage, simplest experience, and highest quality care.
Primary Responsibilities:
Define and execute UHCT's technology vision in alignment with enterprise initiatives
Serve as a core member of the UHCT executive leadership team, influencing enterprise-wide planning and decision-making
Oversee engineering and architecture excellence, platform modernization, and AI/ML transformation
Technology Innovation & Delivery
Drive the development and adoption of reusable AI components and enterprise-wide AI productivity tools
Ensure responsible AI practices across the software development lifecycle
Champion modern engineering practices and scalable digital platforms that support business automation requests
Drive AI transformation agenda; partner with UCHT AI leads to implement AI strategy into workforce model; showcase and share adoption across business & technology teams

Influence and enable high-performing engineering and architecture teams across UHCT

Partner with businesses to deliver secure, compliant, and scalable technology solutions
Governance & Operations
Manage capital and operational budgets, workforce planning, and vendor relationships
Oversee Security, Stability, Cloud Migration efforts across all of UHCT
Ensure compliance with enterprise security, privacy, and regulatory standards
Lead quarterly business reviews (QBRs) and technology forums to align stakeholders and track progress

Required Qualifications:
15+ years of progressive technology leadership experience, including 5+ years in a senior executive role within a complex, matrixed organization
Proven track record of leading large-scale digital and data transformations in healthcare or similarly regulated industries
Skills & Competencies
Proven deep expertise in cloud platforms, AI/ML, data architecture, and enterprise systems
Demonstrated business acumen with the ability to translate strategy into execution
Exceptional communication, stakeholder management and change leadership skills
Disruptive thinker, willing to challenge conventional and siloed thinking, drive change and offer a different viewpoint
Demonstrated success leveraging innovative technology to meet business objectives
Proven ability to operate and effectively navigate in a highly complex, matrixed environment with a high level of collaboration
Ability to build effective working relationships with executives and key business partners to drive change agendas that transform the organization
Demonstrated success influencing c-Suite stakeholders
Ability to build the right team, focus people and model/demand integrity
Knowledgeable of security issues and associated technologies to securely protect our assets
Broad technology experience, including complex systems integration expertise
Experience leveraging shared technology services in a global organization
Results-oriented individual with solid influencing, problem solving and negotiation skills

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $225,000 to $375,000 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
