Job Description The University of California, Berkeley is seeking a Principal Lab Mechanician to support the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER). This position will serve as the primary support to the experimental facilities of PEER Lab for faculty research projects and service-to-industry projects.

The successful candidate will have broad knowledge of machine tool technology, metal fabrication, and metal joining processes, as well as three to four years of journey-level metal fabrication and welding skills. They will be responsible for providing technical support to instructional activities, research, and service to industry projects, performing functional design and assembly of new experimental setups, and maintaining and repairing equipment in the lab's experimental facilities. Responsibilities
Provide technical support to instructional activities, research, and service to industry projects Perform functional design, fabrication, modification, setup, demolition, and technical support of new and existing instructional or research apparatus Maintain, troubleshoot problems, and repair equipment in the lab's experimental facilities Assist in the research for new laboratory equipment needed, including specifications, cost, and availability Required Qualifications
Broad knowledge of machine tool technology, metal fabrication, and metal joining processes Three to four years of journey-level metal fabrication and welding skills Ability to operate overhead crane safely and ability to unload materials from trucks by the safe rigging of various shapes, sizes, and weights Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work at heights Excellent attention to detail and ability to communicate effectively, diplomatically, and professionally Preferred Qualifications
Good computing skills and broad knowledge of electronics Knowledge of graphical data acquisition and Computer Aided Drafting programs A.A. degree, Apprentice Certificate of Completion, or equivalent experience/training Licenses to operate lab equipment (forklift, boomlift, scissorlift) and welding certifications The University of California, Berkeley is an Equal Opportunity Employer and welcomes applications from all qualified candidates.
