JOB SUMMARY
The Pathology Assistant performs gross examination, dissection, and description of surgical specimens; assists with postmortem examinations; and supports pathologists in diagnostic and research activities to ensure high-quality patient care.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Other duties may be assigned. • Performs macroscopic examination and dissection of surgical pathology specimens, including selection of tissue sections for histologic processing, following established protocols. • Prepares and submits tissue samples, ensuring accurate identification, labeling, and documentation. • Performs or assists in postmortem examinations, including external and internal dissection, specimen collection, and documentation. • Prepares gross descriptions for pathology reports in a clear, concise, and accurate manner. • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment used in grossing and specimen preparation; reports malfunctions and coordinates repairs. • Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g., CAP, CLIA, OSHA) and institutional policies for specimen handling, safety, and quality assurance. • Maintains specimen integrity throughout the handling process, documenting any discrepancies or quality issues. • Assists with photography and imaging of specimens as required for documentation or teaching. • Maintains grossing area in a clean, organized, and safe condition, adhering to biosafety standards. • Participates in continuing education and training to maintain certification and proficiency.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS • Bachelor's degree in biological science or related field. • Minimum of one year of grossing experience in a surgical pathology laboratory preferred (may include training program experience). • Successful completion of a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists' Assistant program preferred. • ASCP certification as a Pathologists' Assistant (PA) preferred; eligibility required within 1 year of hire. • Knowledge of anatomy, histology, pathology terminology, and specimen handling procedures. • Ability to work accurately under pressure and meet deadlines.
