The Head Custodian is responsible for assigning, training, and supervising all custodial personnel. In addition, the Head Custodian will assist all Building Principals in all plant operation issues including maintaining, cleaning and preventive maintenance schedules as well as advising on staffing needs and assisting in procuring substitutes for each school when necessary. The Head Custodian will provide the necessary equipment and supplies to ensure efficient building operations. The Head Custodian also has the responsibility for regular cleaning, maintenance and snow removal. The Head Custodian demonstrates professional behavior, promoting positive relationships with students, staff, community members and peers. Performs other related work as assigned directly related to the schools. The head custodian shall be placed on the regular rotation with custodians for assignment to work at both school functions and outside functions, except the head custodian shall be solely responsible for weekend inspections/building checks and responding to alarms at all schools The head custodian will be compensated for two hours work at time and one-half for weekend inspections/building checks and responding to alarms. The head custodian shall maintain a written record of overtime assignments. This written record shall be available to the Union upon request. Position Summary: The Head Custodian is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness, safety, and proper functioning of the school buildings and grounds. This includes supervising custodial staff, coordinating maintenance tasks, and performing hands-on cleaning and repair duties. Seasonal responsibilities include snow removal to ensure safe access to the building during winter months. Key Responsibilities: Custodial Duties: • Maintain overall cleanliness of the building, including classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, gymnasium, cafeteria, and other areas. • Perform routine and deep cleaning: sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, window washing, etc. • Empty trash and recycling containers and ensure proper disposal. Supervisory Duties: • Schedule, train, and supervise custodial staff. • Assign daily and long-term tasks and monitor performance. • Ensure compliance with safety procedures and district policies. • Provides feedback to staff as needed. Maintenance Duties: • Perform minor repairs on furniture, fixtures, doors, windows, and plumbing. • Report and coordinate major repairs with maintenance or outside contractors. • Ensure proper operation of HVAC, lighting, and security systems. Snow Removal and Seasonal Work: • Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, entrances, steps, and emergency exits using shovels, snow blowers, salt, and/or other equipment. • Monitor weather conditions, respond, and coordinate as needed, including early morning, evening, or weekend work. • Maintain snow removal equipment in good working order. Safety & Compliance: • Conduct regular inspections of the facility to ensure safety and cleanliness. • Maintain records of cleaning schedules, supply usage, and maintenance needs. • Follow all district, state, and federal safety regulations (e.g., OSHA). Inventory & Supplies: • Monitor custodial supply inventory and re-order as needed. • Properly store and handle cleaning agents and equipment.
