Job description: The Dental Assistant is responsible for preparing the patient for dental treatment and assisting the dentist with various clinical dental procedures.
Primary Accountability
The Dental Assistant is responsible for preparing the patient for dental treatment and assisting the dentist with various clinical dental procedures.
Responsibilities
- Support and monitor patient flow in the back office, including scrubbing appointments in advance to ensure proper lab cases, finances, and information are available for the patient visit.
- Assist in the distribution of patients among dental providers, including walk-ins; keep patients informed of wait times and ensure proper flow in the system.
- Understand general front office workflows and support the front office when needed, including scheduling patient appointments.
- Greet patients, escort them to the operatory, obtain vital signs and patient data, review health records, and update clinical information (medications, allergies, medical and surgical histories).
- Document in the patient’s electronic health record according to policy and training; obtain consent forms and signatures.
- Operate dental radiographic equipment for oral radiography; disinfect/prepare the operatory and set up trays and armamentarium for treatment.
- Perform supportive dental procedures under general supervision of a dentist, including sterilizing instruments per infection control protocol and assisting during a variety of procedures (charting, restorative, prosthodontics, endodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, pedodontics).
- Ensure patient comfort before, during, and after treatment; provide post-treatment instructions and oral health education as needed; explain treatments to patients when questions arise.
- Take impressions for diagnostic models, bleaching trays, temporary restorations, and sports guards with proper pour-ups; apply non-aerosol/topical agents; remove dressings; apply topical fluoride after scaling/polishing; place/remove rubber dams; place wedge and remove matrices.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support quality of care; communicate with patients and suppliers; prepare and stock operatories; monitor supplies; manage biohazard waste and sharps; perform sterilization equipment testing/cleaning; maintain logs; assist in other operatories or front office as needed by supervision.
- Maintain safety and cleanliness standards and perform other duties as assigned.
Primary Attributes
- Professional & Technical Knowledge: possess work-related skills beyond high school with strong written and verbal communication, computational and computer skills, and health-care related knowledge typically gained through trade school or certificate programs.
- Radiation Safety: proof of completing a Radiation Safety Course.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word (advanced documents, tables, charts); Microsoft Excel (data review, formulas, lookups); Microsoft PowerPoint (basic presentations).
Licenses & Certifications
- Dental Assistant certification; valid CA driver’s license.
Communications Skills
- Ability to prepare information in effective written form (correspondence, reports, articles); ability to convey technical information to non-technical audiences.

Pay Scale
Min Hourly Rate: $21.00; Max Hourly Rate: $28.60
