Overview

Phlebotomist I is responsible for accurate collection and handling of patient laboratory specimens for diagnostic testing according to established best practice in a manner that enhances patient and caregiver engagement.

Base pay range

$18.00/hr - $24.00/hr

Responsibilities

  • Phlebotomist I is responsible for accurately collecting patient specimens for diagnostic testing while working in a professional medical environment. This position functions as part of a dynamic and engaging team with a workload that ranges from fast-paced hospital settings and high/low volume clinics. Caregivers in this role will gain valuable experience and knowledge to help prepare them for workplace and career advancement.
  • The Phlebotomist I performs specimen collection using venipuncture, capillary puncture, PIVO, and throat swab collections across patients of various acuities in Outpatient, Emergency Department, Inpatient settings including newborns and patients in intensive care, while adhering to laboratory compliance and safety regulations.
  • Adheres to personal protective requirements in inpatient and/or outpatient settings (gowns, gloves, lab coats, face shields, masks).
  • Communicates procedures and instructions with patients and family members, demonstrating empathy during every interaction; participates in ongoing growth opportunities such as patient registration, CODE response teams, training and mentoring new staff, specimen processing, special projects, and other lab responsibilities as required by site or assigned by leadership.
  • Maintains organizational skills and the ability to navigate multiple computer systems, work effectively in a team, and maintain a clean and safe work environment. Demonstrates resilience and professionalism in stressful situations.
  • May be required to take on-call shifts and participate in holiday rotations according to department or facility needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (preferred).
  • Six months of phlebotomy experience, phlebotomy training, or national certification as approved by manager/supervisor (preferred).
  • BLS

Physical Requirements

  • Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, and operate monitors.
  • Frequent verbal communication with care teams, patients, and visitors; ability to hear and respond to alarms and needs quickly and accurately, especially during emergencies.
  • Manual dexterity to manipulate complex equipment; frequent computer use for documentation.
  • Ability to lift and transfer patients and equipment; may involve heavy items.
  • Walk, assist with transporting patients and supplies; navigate crowded rooms.
  • May be required to stand for extended periods.
  • For roles requiring driving: ability to drive a vehicle with visual requirements.
