Overview
The Phlebotomist obtains blood specimens from patients by the invasive procedure of venipuncture. Once proficient in adult and geriatric venipuncture and with additional training, the phlebotomist performs skin puncture on neonates, skin puncture or venipuncture on children and adolescents. The phlebotomist is a liaison between the physician and Rush Medical Laboratories. The phlebotomist (Laboratory Liaison Technician) is responsible for collecting specimens for routine, timed and STAT collections. The phlebotomist interacts and communicates with physicians, nurses, laboratory personnel and other members of the health care team. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Pay Range: $16.75 - $21.07 per hour
Note: Rush salaries are determined by factors including education, experience and internal equity. Offers may vary depending on the circumstances of each case.
Responsibilities

- Responds promptly to pages.
- Volunteers to help others complete work when time permits.
- Reports back to the laboratory for further assignment when assigned work is complete.
- Verifies patient identification according to SOP; identifies and labels specimens according to SOP.
- Collects specimens according to laboratory requirements; acquires specimens using proper phlebotomy technique.
- Maintains positive working relationships and supports teamwork.
- Acts as a resource for technical questions and demonstrates knowledge of phlebotomy tasks (e.g., timed collections, site selection, order of draw, scheduling and ordering).
- Attends and documents required hours of continuing education.
- Helps train students and new employees; completes training checklists within established deadlines.
- Organizes and prioritizes work; collects timed specimens and ensures timely transport to the laboratory; maintains clean work areas.
- Stocks and replenishes supplies; communicates problems or unusual situations promptly and seeks resolution.
- Performs LIS order entry correctly and double checks orders to avoid omissions.
- Performs specimen accessioning and processing; advises on order and scheduling in CPOE.
- Documents missed or delayed draws and communicates with the team; participates in special projects or events as needed.
- Acts as a "tech-in-charge" for specified periods and knows when to defer issues to the appropriate personnel.
Required Job Qualifications
- High School graduate.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
Preferred Job Qualifications
- National Phlebotomy Association or equivalent certification.
- Two years of phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting.
Physical Demands
- Works throughout the Medical Center's patient care areas and laboratories.
- Frequent exposure to potentially infectious diseases and body fluids.
- Work requires bending, standing and walking for the majority of the workday.
