JOB SUMMARY: This is journey-level mechanical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of air conditioning equipment and energy management control systems. An incumbent in this class is responsible for installing, performing skilled repairs and providing preventative maintenance on light and heavy duty air-conditioning, refrigeration, heating and ventilation equipment, ice machines and water coolers.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Installs cooling, heating and refrigerating systems and components according to blueprints and specifications; assembles and connects internal piping and external drainage lines; installs and checks electronic and mechanical operation and temperature controls.
  • Lubricates machinery and recharges systems with refrigerant; inspects for refrigerant leaks and faulty components; effects repairs; replaces parts.
  • Operates equipment; adjusts temperature sensing devices; modifies air intake and output for desired effect.
  • Prepares and maintains work records and reports as required by E.P.A.; estimates labor and material requirements; maintains inventory records.
  • Coordinates repairs and maintenance activities between the City and contract maintenance vendors.
  • Maintains tools and equipment.
  • Provides supervision to unskilled and semi-skilled employees assisting in installation of equipment.
  • Must effectively and positively represent the City in delivering and performing work with colleagues and clients, irrespective of gender, race, religion, age, disability, political affiliation or belief, or sexual orientation.
  • Must maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors, managers and the public.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

High School Diploma or GED equivalent; four (4) years of experience in air conditioning maintenance and repair. Must possess a State of Florida or Broward County Certified Air-Conditioning Journeyman License or Air Conditioning Contractor License. Must possess an EPA Universal Refrigerant License.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • State of Florida or Broward County Certified Air Conditioning Journeyman License or Air Conditioning Contractor License
  • EPA Universal Refrigerant License
  • Valid Driver’s License: With proof of automobile insurance
  • Background Check: Must have an acceptable background record
  • Driving Abstract: Must have an acceptable driving record

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Considerable knowledge of standard practices, materials and tools used in the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of air conditioning, refrigeration and heating equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles of electricity as applied to air cooling and heating.
  • Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Knowledge of governmental codes affecting air cooling and heating.
  • Some knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
  • Skill in the utilization of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to install, adjust, and repair air conditioning, refrigeration and heating equipment and controls.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and rough sketches.
  • Ability to estimate labor and material costs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, fellow employees, and vendors.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to prepare reports and maintain records using an automated work order system.
  • Ability to maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors, managers and the public.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work involves moderate to heavy physical activity in a primarily outdoor setting under all types of weather conditions with the added exposure to insects, animals and other hazards.
