Overview
Registered Nurse (RN) - Ambulatory Surgery Center openings and general nursing leadership roles are described. This position supervises the day-to-day nursing activities during the tour of duty in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines and regulations to ensure high quality care.
Responsibilities
- Administrative Functions: Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing day-to-day nursing activities; develop, maintain, and update policies and procedures; ensure reference materials are current; maintain Nursing Service Procedures Manual; ensure staff compliance with procedures; report to the Director; review and revise department policies and manuals; coordinate nursing services with other resident services; participate in the facility’s quality assurance program and surveys; participate in discharge planning; plan department services, programs, and activities; admit, transfer, and discharge residents; complete accident/incident reports; interpret policies to personnel, residents, visitors, and agencies; perform administrative duties (forms, reports, etc.).
- Committee Functions: Attend committee meetings; prepare reports; provide information to QA/Assessment Committee; participate in Care Plan Committee and related reviews; implement committee recommendations.
- Personnel Functions: Ensure adequate staffing, develop work assignments, delegate authority to Charge Nurses; ensure training program enrollment; supervise rounds and staffing; monitor absenteeism; enforce policies and dress codes; address complaints and grievances; foster collaboration with other departments; maintain a warm and professional unit environment; participate in performance evaluations and staffing decisions; ensure fair disciplinary action; report occupational exposures and suspected fraud; ensure security of resident information systems.
- Nursing Care Functions: Inform admissions, prepare rooms, greet new residents, assist physician rounds, encourage timely documentation, plan resident care with families and physicians, monitor resident status, ensure direct nursing care by licensed staff, review nursing notes, provide direct care when needed, manage IVs and specimens, monitor vitals, admit/transfer/discharge residents, communicate status to the Director, coordinate care plans, supervise medication administration and safety, maintain clean/safe treatment areas, check on residents who cannot call for help, involve residents and families in care planning, arrange discharge transportation, notify of changes in condition and deaths when appropriate.
- Staff Development: Develop and deliver in-service training, assist in annual in-service programs (OSHA, HIPAA, Safety, Infection Control, etc.), supervise clinical training for nurse aides, participate in continuing education, support safety program development and infection control, ensure PPE availability and proper use, enforce hand hygiene, participate in drills, and support infection control program maintenance.
- Equipment and Supplies: Advise on department equipment and supply needs; maintain adequate stock; assist in preventive maintenance; ensure safe operation of equipment; train personnel on equipment use; minimize waste; maintain MSDS records for hazardous chemicals.
- Care Plan and Assessment: Develop preliminary and comprehensive resident assessments; participate in care plan development; involve residents in plan reviews; ensure staff refer to care plans before care delivery; review care plans for goals and revisions; assist in planning and revising MDS through the Resident Assessment/Care Plan Coordinator.
- Budget and Planning: Monitor economic conditions and adjust nursing services accordingly; report incidences of fraud; coordinate budget-related needs.
Supervisory Requirements
Assist with supervision and management of the nursing staff. As an RN, you are delegated administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability for assigned duties.
Qualifications
Education and/or Experience
Minimum Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university. Training in rehabilitative/restorative nursing. 2+ years experience, preferably in a long-term care facility.
Language Skills
Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English. Able to read technical procedures and manuals; provide information clearly to managers and employees.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to make independent decisions, solve practical problems, work with diverse people, demonstrate leadership and supervisory ability, and plan/interpret programs, goals, and procedures for quality care.
Must demonstrate knowledge and skills for age-related needs; be a supportive team member; be knowledgeable of nursing practices and applicable laws/regulations; possess patience, tact, and enthusiasm; willingness to adopt new methods; be able to communicate resident conditions; must not pose a direct health or safety threat.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Current, unencumbered RN license in the state; current CPR certification. PCC knowledge preferred. Maintain continuing education/licensing and good standing with the State Board of Nursing.
Physical Demands
Occasional mobility throughout the day; able to speak/write English clearly; cope with mental and emotional stress; vision and hearing adequate; ability to work independently with integrity; meet health requirements including medical exam; able to relate to ill and elderly residents; able to push/pull/move up to 25 pounds to 5 feet and 50 feet distance; assist in evacuations as needed.
Work Environment
Works in office and nursing areas; frequent interruptions; interacts with residents, families, staff, and agencies; may require irregular hours including weekends/holidays and emergencies; exposure to infectious waste, diseases, chemicals; may involve heat, dust, odors. Maintains liaison to plan for resident needs.
