Overview

Senior Principal Engineer - Automation Engineering – Biologics at Eli Lilly and Company. The Senior Principal Engineer will be part of the Automation Engineering Department at Lilly Foundry, providing automation support for operating areas and capital projects. The role emphasizes reliable and compliant control applications and systems to support GMP operations and site startup activities. During the project delivery and startup phase (startup expected 2025 to 2028), the automation engineering team will work to support project delivery, build a new organization, and implement systems and processes required for GMP operations, requiring collaboration, creativity, and resilience as the site grows to full-scale manufacturing. Responsibilities

Provide technical leadership for automation engineering across site areas and capital projects. Mentor the process control team in design, controls philosophy, implementation, and commissioning. Lead process control work implementation and coordination; develop and implement the Automation Engineering Project Plan. Technically lead site area leads and system integrators, including Functional Requirements, Design Specifications, DCS Software, and Test Specifications. Lead/participate in design reviews and DeltaV software reviews; participate in FATs and commissioning activities. Lead a team of automation engineers supporting commissioning; provide periodic status updates to Project Management. Define functional requirements and process control strategies in collaboration with Process Engineering. Design, configure, and test DCS/SCADA software (sequence logic, graphics, batch software, etc.). Perform automation activities including design, tuning, and troubleshooting of control loops; support electronic systems for production data capture. Maintain validated state of site control systems per Lilly quality standards, including validation strategies and documentation. Support automation for capital projects and new product introductions; promote automation to improve productivity, efficiency, and compliance. Develop and leverage a network of corporate contacts and expertise as needed. Organizational Capability

Set and reinforce standards for rigor in automation work products with automation and compliance consultants. Demonstrate initiative, planning, organizational skills, prioritization, and timely task completion. Apply technical curiosity and problem-solving to continuous improvement. Influence peers and business partners; communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences. Knowledge of GMP, regulatory requirements, and computer system validation. Basic Requirements

Minimum B.S. in Engineering; experience in Automation Engineering, preferably in Biologics manufacturing. 8+ years in Biopharma engineering, operations, or manufacturing. Experience in design, development, commissioning, and qualification of highly automated greenfield manufacturing sites using SCADA, DCS, PLC, and MES systems (DeltaV, Rockwell, Syncade, etc.). Experience facilitating and driving decision-making at an organizational level. Additional Information
