This Special Assets Portfolio Manager is responsible for assisting the special assets team with client relationships at Midland States Bank, including analyzing credits to support sound credit decisions, identifying credit risks, and preparing loans for presentation to the loan committee. The Portfolio Manager supports the Special Assets team in developing and executing resolution strategies, including restructures, workouts, and OREO dispositions, and works with internal stakeholders and external partners to protect the Bank’s interests. Primary Accountabilities
Analyze, monitor, and manage a portfolio of criticized and distressed loan relationships, ensuring proactive identification of credit risk and appropriate resolution strategies. Oversee routine maintenance and management of the portfolio, including the tickler system, financial reporting, and loan reviews. Conduct in-depth loan reviews, financial analysis, collateral evaluations, and borrower performance assessments. Partner with Special Assets team to structure and prepare Credit Approval Forms (CAF), impairment analyses, and action plans for criticized assets. Support and coordinate OREO (Other Real Estate Owned) migration, including due diligence, valuation review, and disposition strategy. Provide timely and accurate reporting and portfolio metrics for the Special Assets Department, including delinquency trends, impairment summaries, and watchlist commentary. Oversee tracking of appraisal schedules, covenant compliance, financial reporting, and other critical loan monitoring activities. Collaborate with Credit Administration, Legal, Appraisal, and Loan Operations teams to ensure policy adherence, documentation accuracy, and regulatory compliance. Attend and support loan committee meetings, assisting in the development and presentation of credit actions. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of loan policies, regulatory changes, and industry best practices affecting special assets and credit risk. Participate in internal and external audits, loan reviews, and regulatory examinations as needed. Occasional travel required for training, borrower site visits, or team meetings; may require work in a Midland office to support internal and external customers. Maintain compliance with applicable regulations including, but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA). Other duties as assigned. Position Qualifications
Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field; relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in commercial credit, loan review, special assets, or related banking functions. Experience managing distressed loan portfolios or supporting credit remediation efforts is strongly preferred. Strong analytical, critical thinking, and financial modeling skills. Sound understanding of commercial lending, loan documentation, collateral valuation, and regulatory compliance. Ability to make well-reasoned decisions and recommendations with minimal supervision. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience with formal credit write-ups and presentations. High level of professionalism, integrity, and discretion in handling sensitive credit matters. Competencies/Other Skills
