Responsibilities

Operate harbor tugs (conventional and z-drives) in a ship assist capacity to include mooring, docking, berthing, and shifting of ships and/or barges, coordinating movements with harbor pilots via a VHF radio.

Delegate work assignments to crew members.

Maintain Official Vessel Log and vessel work log.

Perform general maintenance on vessel and vessel equipment.

Perform sanitary work on vessel and boathouse area.

Perform GAR Risk Calculator prior to operations.

Other Duties/Functions

Conduct safety talks with crew members.

Supervise crew with deck assignments.

Perform duties as assigned.

Working Conditions Works outdoors in, on, or about tug in wet, humid, noisy, and odorous conditions and is occasionally exposed to exhaust fumes and dust; frequently uses paints, solvents, and thinners. Equipment Use: Operates harbor tugs properly and safely; uses basic hand and hand-held power tools; operates VHF radio and radar.

Work Hours Forty (40) hours per week for regular full-time employees in the Ports of Kahului, Nawiliwili & Hilo, with eligibility for overtime after eight (8) hours per day or forty (40) hours per week. Regular days off: two consecutive days. Shifts may be split; call time: none on regular days.

Mental Demands Must be able to complete timesheets and crew/job assignments logs; be attentive to detail and alert to ensure safety; able to receive and follow instructions and communicate with coworkers, harbor pilots, and supervisory personnel; able to read and comprehend manufacturer manuals.

Physical Demands

Sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, squatting, jumping, standing, walking, reaching, throwing, handling, eye-hand-foot coordination, vision requirements (20/40 corrected, color sense).

Lifting up to 50 pounds; pushing/pulling; operating controls; lines and equipment handling.

Qualifications / Requirements (Licenses, Degrees, Certificates)

U.S. Coast Guard Master’s License, 200 GRT or Greater (500 ITC) Near Coastal, with Master of Tow Vessels Near Coastal endorsement.

Current radar observer endorsement and FCC marine radiotelephone operator permit.

STCW 95 endorsement preferred.

Skills/Knowledge: Navigate/pilot harbor waters; good judgment operating tugs and handling equipment; communicate with harbor pilots via VHF radio.

Education/Training: High School diploma or GED; verbal, reading, and writing skills as needed for delegation and record-keeping.

Experience: Minimum of two (2) years’ experience operating ASD tractor tugs.
