About the Opportunity Plural Publishing is seeking a Project Editor for a 6-month, full-time temporary role in our San Diego office. This position offers a hands-on opportunity to deepen your publishing expertise while working closely with authors, editors, and contributors throughout the editorial process. It is an ideal role for candidates looking to strengthen their editorial and project management skills while contributing directly to the development of high-quality academic texts. About the Role The Project Editor (PE) is a key member of the Editorial team, responsible for guiding manuscripts from development through delivery to Production. Reporting to the Managing Editor and working closely with the Editorial Director of Acquisitions, Associate Acquisitions Editor, and authors, the PE ensures projects meet contractual, editorial, and quality standards. This role serves as the primary liaison for authors, editors, and contributors during manuscript development, and oversees the timely delivery of ancillary materials for our companion website. The PE also collaborates with Production, Sales, Marketing, and other departments to maintain smooth workflows and uphold publishing excellence. Primary Responsibilities Establish project schedules and timelines with authors. Maintain consistent author communication to keep manuscripts on schedule, negotiating extensions when necessary. Maintain up-to-date editorial documentation and project status reports. Track manuscripts through assignment, peer review, submission, and revisions. Communicate and enforce manuscript, artwork, and ancillary guidelines. Monitor adherence to publishing agreements and editorial plans. Coordinate and participate in Kickoff and Launch meetings with authors. Oversee peer review process and communicate feedback to Acquisitions Editors and authors. Track contributor agreements and manage third-party chapter submissions. Assign and delegate tasks to Editorial Assistants, interns, and freelancers. Review manuscripts for style, consistency, and formatting before hand-off to Production. Manage permissions requests and verify artwork sources (assisting authors as needed). Support cover development by working with the authors and Acquisitions on concepts and images. Review back cover copy drafts and route approvals between Marketing, Editorial, and authors. Create and maintain companion websites using the company CMS. Monitor ancillary deliverables (e.g., PPT decks, test banks, instructor manuals), delegating to support staff. Track budgets and expenses; process payments to authors, vendors, and copyright holders. Sug gest improvements to editorial workflows, tools, and standards. Represent Plural Publishing at professional meetings as required. Qualifications & Skills Publishing experience required, ideally in college textbook or medical/scientific publishing. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong project management, organizational, and time-management skills. Detail-oriented, with the ability to deliver accurate, high-quality work under deadlines. Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously with creativity and sound judgment. Comfortable delegating to assistants, interns, and freelancers. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; CMS experience a plus. Ability to learn and adapt to new technologies. Team-oriented, confident, and motivated problem solver. Compensation : $45,000 – $60,000 annualized, prorated for the 6-month duration of this temporary, full-time position.
