Animal Facility Specialist - 118857 at Johns Hopkins University. Research Animal Resources seeks a Large Animal Facility Specialist to provide high standards of animal care, welfare and technical assistance in support of research initiatives. The role involves working independently on routine yet complex tasks and complying with policies including the USDA Animal Welfare Act, the ILAR Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Johns Hopkins University policies, and Animal Care and Use Committee procedures. Responsibilities

Perform all tasks of the Animal Cage Washer as needed. Clean, sanitize and sterilize animal cages, feeders, water bottles, animal rooms, support spaces and related equipment. Fill animal feeders, bowls and water bottles with appropriate types and amounts of food and water according to schedules and detailed instructions. Use aseptic technique and disease prevention principles in a Class I or Class II biological safety cabinet. Transfer animals from soiled cages to clean, sterilized cages following schedules and instructions (includes transfers of non-human primates and other large animals using specific equipment or by hand). Work under isolation conditions using specialized caging units and adhere to aseptic techniques and disease prevention principles. Place bedding, feed, water bottles, etc. into assembled, sanitized cages. Observe and report signs of animal injuries, illness or irregularities in appearance, health or environment to the supervisor. Provide routine treatments as instructed (e.g., ear mite medication, dental clipping, etc.). Provide enrichment to large animals as directed and document appropriately. Perform social introductions for certain large animals for pair or group housing and monitor daily for continued compatibility. Perform euthanasia following training and instructions. Receive and process incoming animals and materials. Examine for compliance with specifications, reject unsuitable animals and refer questionable cases to the supervisor. Maintain colonies of genetically altered rodents and may be required to perform data collection. Maintain accurate records of animals cared for and their food and water consumption; calculate animal census. Maintain records of environmental factors (temperature, humidity, lighting) and report deviations; record on the room environment log sheet. Maintain stock of feed, bedding and supplies; perform repairs on cages and equipment as needed. Lubricate equipment, make minor adjustments and repairs to cages and equipment; change air filters for laboratory animal equipment as needed. Report repair needs to the supervisor; perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on automated watering systems and other support equipment. Collect, process and dispose of waste material following proper procedures for animal carcasses and biohazardous waste. Follow safety policies and use appropriate PPE; adhere to good laboratory practices and good housekeeping. Maintain clean and orderly work areas and sanitize as required. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications

High school degree or equivalent. Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from AALAS required. Special Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Knowledge of basic animal husbandry and research techniques. Knowledge of basic scientific terminology, measurements and calculations. Knowledge of asepsis, disease control, barrier and isolation housing. Knowledge of breeding and mating systems. Knowledge of current regulations, policies and principles for care and use of laboratory animals. Ability to handle, restrain and determine the sex of laboratory animals without causing harm. Ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions; read and write to maintain records. Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays. Ability to interact professionally with faculty, students, staff and visitors. Ability to discuss animal-related projects with investigators and report to the supervisor. Ability to work under environmental conditions requiring safety equipment. Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs; stand, walk, and ascend/descend stairs regularly. Specialty Occupational Health requirements up to date. Preferred Qualifications

One year of laboratory animal care or related experience.
