Assist with organizing, directing, and supervising the day-to-day activities of the entire police and public safety department. Support the Chief of Police in overseeing campus law enforcement and security operations. Contribute to strategic planning, emergency preparedness, threat assessment, community engagement, and leadership development initiatives. Foster a positive, collaborative relationship between law enforcement and campus stakeholders; engage in effective leadership, coordination, and communication to support a secure and inclusive university environment. Organizational Context

The Police and Public Safety unit’s mission is to provide a safe and secure environment supporting the University’s pursuit of research and academic excellence, with ongoing efforts to reduce crime, accidents, and property loss through investigation and community partnerships. Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or equivalent with 10 years of command experience and 4 years of supervisory experience in law enforcement at the rank of Commander or Captain; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Master’s degree is preferred but not required. Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer per North Carolina CJSTC or certification eligible for out-of-state lateral hires. Preferred Qualifications and Skills

Strategic mindset with ability to devise plans aligning with the university’s objectives and values, including long-term departmental goals. Ethical decision-making, integrity, accountability, and fairness in daily operations and ethical dilemmas. Strong leadership, collaboration, conflict resolution, and communication skills; ability to engage diverse campus communities. Adaptability to evolving campus environments and law enforcement practices; openness to innovative security, emergency management, and community engagement approaches. License/Certification

Successful candidates should have graduated from a North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training or hold certification as a law enforcement officer in their state. Continuous service as a full-time sworn officer is required at appointment (no more than a one-year break). North Carolina law does not have reciprocal arrangements with federal certifications. Prior experience in higher education or as a Senior Level Police Executive is advantageous. Work Arrangement
