PetSmart’s Store Leader has leadership oversight of safety of people and pets, pet parent experience, operational execution, financial outcomes, and all human resource functions within all areas of the store. This role provides exemplary leadership by driving the company culture and strategies, achieving targeted results, championing exceptional pet parent service, and ensuring efficient execution of the store’s daily business while upholding the company’s vision, mission, values, and strategy. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, and may vary by store characteristics and needs: People Leadership
Responsible for employment decisions such as recruiting, interviewing, hiring, coaching, and terminating. Builds an open-door culture by engaging and listening to associates. Responds to associate feedback using the Voice of Associate tool. Creates and posts the store schedule after input from Experience and Process Leader. Facilitates associate experience and development, including reviews, recognition, training, onboarding, mentoring, and succession planning. Delegates effectively, empowers others to succeed, and encourages ownership of results. Cascades information and adjusts priorities to meet goals. Maintains alignment with changing environment and addresses associate complaints and grievances. Recognizes associates driving engagement and ensures on-time reviews. Overall Store Experience
Leads associate and pet parent experience; ensures pets are safe and healthy. Manages pet parent experience and responds to general and escalated concerns. Delivers an exceptional in-store experience and seeks process improvements. Collaborates with Store Leadership on in-store and community events, including adoption partnerships. Maintains store standards and a culture of compliance with policies and ethics. Conducts monthly Core and Services Walks to validate policy execution. Ensures a safe environment for associates, pets, and pet parents; manages inventory levels and in-stock status. Communicates business and financial objectives and reviews in-store metrics; uses cameras for safety and coaching where appropriate. Responds to pet health incidents (e.g., sick/injured pets) and coordinates transportation as needed. Shares responsibilities with store opening and closing procedures to uphold brand promise. Business Management
Delivers corporate strategy and profitability goals through leadership execution. Analyzes reporting, identifies root causes, and informs improvement plans. Drives opportunities to grow the business, holds associates accountable for store P&L targets. Manages expenses such as labor and supplies; leverages home office resources for store-related work orders and purchasing. Creates and posts store schedules; processes weekly payroll within budget. Performs daily, weekly, and monthly reporting; handles required paperwork; runs store-related errands as needed. QUALIFICATIONS
4-6 years of retail leadership or experience in a customer-focused environment. Full-time availability, flexible schedule; able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Proficiency in computer applications. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to react under pressure and maintain composure. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
Typically oversees the Experience Leader and Process Leader, up to six lead associates and ten to seventy non-leader associates. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Standing, walking, climbing a ladder, and using hands to handle, feel, hold, write, etc. Ability to reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch; depth perception; reasonable accommodations available. Occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds; occasionally team lift over 100 pounds. Exposure to moving parts, pet hair, moderate noise; potential exposure to live animals.
